I remember when I was 10 I wrote to Mark Bright c/o the Palace. Got a signed photo (I think it's on a gallery on this site) and an A4 letter on Palace headed notepaper that was fully personalised (he even included a note for my dad to tell him to take me to my first Palace game...which he duly did!). Proper ambassadors for the club in those days. I vaguely remember seeing a photo in match magazine of one of the Villa players answering stacks of fan mail as part and parcel of his job as a professional footballer. I think it might have been Mark Draper....

Anyway, when you're paid more in a week than most people get in a year I think you ought to spare some time for some kids who have stood for an hour waiting for you to come past. So what if they end up on eBay? Costs the players nothing apart from a few minutes out of their incredibly affluent lifestyle.

We are 'Singing from the same hymn sheet' on this matter.

Used to go early for some games to get autographs. Then last season (the Watford game I think) got there for 12.45 only for the players to arrive by coach well after 2 and get dropped off at the corner of the Holmesdale and nobody signed.

Did any players acknowledge the supporters with a wave or a smile or any such acknowledgement gesture or just stare straight ahead with those darned headphones on ?

My kids try and get selfies with players, which most are happy to do. But I can see why they'd get pissed off with a load of middle aged blokes with folders of match attack cards trying to get them signed. No prizes for guessing what happens to them.

There are, unsurprisingly, no CPFC autographs on eBay that I can find.

Ask yourselves the question: "How much would I pay for a Delaney, Ward, Chungy autograph?"

I imagine, like me, most will say: "Zero" and that's the opinion on a fan website!

The thought of people coining it in by flogging CPFC-autographed merchandise online is laughable.

However, there is an Iain Dowie badge for sale currently. Latest Bid?: One penny.

I did the same when I was a kid, got a letter in reply from Gareth Southgate and a signed pic, Bruce Dyer and a few more, it proper made my day. A lot of my mates who were Manure glory hunters did the same and got back nothing.
I have told my son to write one to see if he gets anything back, he's desperate to get Wilfs but he is normally listening to his music after the match .....

He might get some luck writing to him. Fingers crossed, it would be good to hear the players still take a bit of time out to do that kind of thing.

I'm surprised some of the players haven't set up eBay accounts with "average Joe" sounding names just to flog merchandise with their own autographs on!

Or Tony Pulis busily autographing baseball caps to pay off Palace.

Sorry to revive this but are the players still being taken to the gate in a bus like last season or have they reverted to their own cars?

They drive in. Apparently Hennessy is taken in a ‘pope mobile’ surrounded by crystals hoping that someone will pay him some attention and ask for an autograph, unfortunately he’s still waiting

Thanks - although I'd have thought Speroni would come in a sedan chair.
