My not so early impression is that it's weaker than the one that finished last season, I hope Connor Wickham starts to re-pay his transfer fee and wages, and that there's only two weeks before we're playing for points.

As we don't have Sakho, I tend to agree and I'd say, as a minimum, we need another GK for competition, a CB (preferably left-footed), a RB/RWB for cover/competition, another AM and a striker for cover.

Early impressions gleaned from a poor live stream are that our first touch remains poor, and we were dispossesed far too easily and that is a concern for the style we seem to be aiming for.

Cynic or realist? It's a fine line!

I'd like to see Sakho come as he'd fit right into the 3-4-3 system. I'd also like to see another striker in the mould of Murray or Rodrigues or Defoe and I'm hopeful that we'll find someone this transfer window. Realistically this could cost £45m - £55m.

I would hate to plump money (SP's money or anyone's) on a Dutch maybe. The guy at Tottenham has struggled and I don't think just anyone will take off in the PL. Of course, would be nice to unearth a gem. It must be possible to improve on Campbell without breaking the bank.

The early impressions is we will be underprepared as usual. We have a good group of 12 to 15 players but little else after that in terms of quality and experience.

I think we're in a decent position. We're not in August yet and we have made 2 decent signings and removed a fair bit of deadwood. The big positive is that we seem to be taking the academy more seriously.
As most agree we need a GK, a RM/RWB, Sakho and a third striker.

Slightly concerned about our new style of playing it out from the back. From the pre-season action I have seen our passing is not quite crisp enough and we have no one centrally who has the composure to turn and create or feed anything forward (is Cabaye staying?) ... Punch just dawdles too much for me and is forever passing it backwards. Need Wickham back ASAP as a back up / option for CB and I really hope we can still do a late deal with the bindippers for Sakho. Otherwise excited as usual for the new season.

Think loftus cheek is the one. Got the ball a few times vs west Brom and drove on. Some nice neat inter play with wilf and benteke

Trying to look at this a little more positive barring Sakho, the same squad remains that achieved wins at Chelsea, anfield and comprehensively beat arsenal. Yes the squad depth remains an issue but let's not right the season off just yet. Coyp

Yes, but that squad was playing 4-2-3-1/4-5-1, which they were not only comfortable with, but proved to be pretty good at.

Interesting that is true as is what Dan says , if we had had Sam and that style and squad all season we would not have been in relegation trouble.
I wonder if FdB might decide after all his tinkering, 'If if ain't broke don't fix it'

Potentially weaker than the squad we finished last season with?

I somehow doubt it. We're in "getting to the next level" mode, which is fine except that the lower three divisions are littered with clubs that had the same idea. I've no problem with trying to play more "attractive" football (whatever that may be), but when it's taken us so long to learn to walk confidently, I do have concerns about our ability to immediately switch to sprinting. Not that it matters one jot what I think, but if I were able to give the powers-that-be any advice it would be make progress slowly.
