In a 3-4-3 you want a player like Benteke in the middle, either for crosses coming in from the wingbacks/wingers/RF/LF or to hold up/knock down balls for the others to come on to.

His job wouldn't to do a normal wingers job, it'd be still as a target man but up against smaller defender/midfielders. Remember you'd have Townsend running in behind and a central striker in the middle benefiting from Benteke's hold up play.

No, Zaha on the left. And if De Boer wants Townsend as RM/RWB then that's where he'll play. A front three of Zaha - Benteke - Townsend certainly works but De Boers not played Townsend in that 3.

This suggestion is only as a try out in pre-season games and more in the case if we sign a less physical poacher.

I saw FdB using Townsend as the RWB in HK, mainly because with the squad we have, he is the most suited. Leaving the RF place up for grabs, Sako looking the most likely, without any new additions to the area. If we bought in a RWB, you'd expect Townsend to claim the RF role unchallenged.

Would be quite nice to see Wan-Bissaka starting as RWB and Townsend as RF against Metz.

I think we can just take the first 3 letters of the ops username as the context we need

And the sooner Frank grasps that, albeit I prefer Zaha on the right and Townsend on the left if Benteke is to get any service via crosses at all, the better I'll like it. We've got to play to our strengths otherwise we're going to be mullered, including by Huddersfield.

Surely he's playing those who he sees as his starters in the positions they will be played in for the season? Personally I would play Townsend as the wide right forward but FdB didn't play him there.

I don't think FdB is a huge fan of Benteke, CB struggled at Liverpool who tried to play football through the middle, he could have a bit more space in wide areas and he'll certainly have the physical advantage out there.

There's a problem with the squad: we have one fit senior striker.

Let's play him out wide.

Hear me out.

With Riedewald played at LCB he can certainly hit the long diagonals to a player playing on the right side of a front three. Juventus use Mandzukic as a sort of wide target man where he can move onto defenders and midfielders smaller than him and more easily hit knock downs to Higuain. Mandzukic may be more willing than Benteke to do the dirty work but Benteke is more gifted on the floor than Mandzukic and is ok doing a pressing role.

You'd assume we are looking for another striker, someone like Van Persie or a similar poacher could work in the same team as Benteke.

De Boer seems intent on playing Zaha as the left sided wide forward but not settled on the right-sided one yet, with Townsend played as the right midfielder in both pre-season matches so far.

Anyway, just a thought. Could be worth a try in pre-season, could work, could look horrendous but then that's what pre-season is for; trying new things. In think Riedewald could have some joy finding Benteke in wide positions, letting us get up the pitch quicker. If not Benteke then Wickham could be used like this, he's played on the wing for Sunderland before.

Your Alan Pardew arent you? little tinker you

Yep. His job, is to be the last man to touch the ball before the keeper. No wait, that was Campbell - Benteke is to be the last player to touch the ball, before the keeper picks it out the back of the net.

Then he needs to have a rethink, IF that's the case. He got us 15 goals last season in a team that struggled for a large part of it. Put it this way, if I was in charge and FdB said to me either Benteke goes or I do, I'd say "you know where the door is Frank".
