My opinion is that dann and Tomkins are to similar to be affective together.

For me Dann could only play in the centre of the back 3, Tomkins has a bit more of an ability to take the ball forwards. CB is something I'd upgrade if we had the money, otherwise I think Dann could still do a job for us. It's not as if he's never played CB before after all.

I agree, I think the problem maybe that Kelly, dann and Tomkins all prefer playing as the central centreback. I'd also like us to add someone like capoue of Watford - box to box midfield, would complement Luka really well.

Agreed, Loftus-cheek could be that player for us. Don't think Cabaye or Puncheon will have much in a 3-4-3 system so could see Yohan off in a few weeks.

We should have plenty of money as we haven't spent any yet apart from Loftus-Cheek's loan fee and that shouldn't break the bank

I find the insistence on 3-4-3 rather odd! A new manager comes to a club,he looks at the players he has and then (with a few weeks to the start of the season)works out the best formation that those players will fit into.If a manager is fond of a particular formation he uses the whole of the next summer break to get the players in that suit that system, this to me is obvious and FDB may have a very rude awakening.

the players FDB brings in will know his tactics/style of play so it will not be such a big issue

I agree plus, he says that, having looked at the squad it would best suit 3-4-3 (albeit three at the back has been largely a disaster for us in the past), but it appears we need to make signings for it to work. I share your concern with respect to the start of the season, particularly as FdB has no experience of the PL and may be overestimating our abilities or underestimating the quality of the opposition. I hope to be proved wrong.

We've been playing 4-5-1 for years now.

There is absolutely no need to spend preseason games using a formation that the players, at this stage, could most likely prepare for by themselves. Much better to spend time trying something out that might fix the problems we've had against teams in the bottom half at home.

The central cb has to act as a sweeper in 3 back formation, like Luiz at Chelsea. If we persuaded Sakho he'd play there.

It's worth noting some of the warnings in that article:

"A 3-4-3 is an infamously tricky formation to sustain for an extended period of time. Few sides have ever truly realised its potential"

"Many other managers who have tried to make use of it have ultimately seen its demands for high-energy, especially from the players deployed at wing-back and in central midfield lead to burn out, injuries and disarray"

"Without the right personnel it is unsustainable and unwise to try"

Let's hope we're not biting off more than we can chew.

In this 3-4-3 taking Chelsea for example at club doing it well. First you need a goalie that can distribute well, a central centre back that acts as sweeper prepared to bring the ball out from the back. There's to many specialists positions in this formation that we currently haven't got.
