My memory is fading here, but I went to a Palace v Brighton game relatively early in the 'Eagles' era, and it took me a while to realise that Brighton fans were responding to chants of "Eagles" by chanting "Seagulls". I took it that they were mocking our nickname. Thing is; I'm convinced that this pre-dates the nickname switch referred to in the article. Another memory, possibly from the same game, is seeing a bloke wearing a top embroidered with "Sea-Eagles". Even today I don't quite get why, although others around me seemed to think it was quite funny. Can anyone help with these confused memories. Nurse.....NURSE!! I think you're right - I remember that game. We had only recently changed our nickname from "The Glaziers" to "The Eagles". I'm sure the Brighton fans were mocking us so it was interesting to see that they had officially changed their nickname. Can't be sure when The Dolphins became The Seagulls but it's my recollection that Eagles pre-dates Seagulls. Cheeky b*****rs! I used to wear an "I hate Brighton" badge to every game and hated them with a vengeance. Now I live in Sussex and most of my friends are Brighton supporters. The rivalry is more friendly these days - for me at least - and I'm looking forward to some cracking encounters this season.

I think that the nickname change occurred for very obvious reasons. The dolphin is a much loved, highly intelligent and social beast. The seagull is unnecessarily aggressive, sounds appalling, steals your ice cream, hangs around rubbish dumps and voids its bowels on beaches, pavements and public monuments.

Shebeagle you've very humorously highlighted what deep-down I've always thought; why would anyone choose to be called 'the Seagulls'? It's a crap name; no pun intended.
Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes) |

Back in the 80s I got printed up a couple of hundred Brighton Scum of the South badges, made a fair few bob coming away from a couple of home games with pockets filled with coins dragging my jeans down. Most of them where then thrown into the Brighton end when we went down to the goldstone. Made it into the Evening Standard, too as it really wound them up. Also heard that there's another far greater, historical reason for our rivalry that dates back to the Fairfields (of Fairfield's Hall fame) being the sight of a yearly fair and fighting ground for the Coast and South London. Some good memories of bygone days but it all seemed so much more innocent then. Yes you may have taken a punch or two but nothing like the knife crime and acid attacks that are now starting to become the norm. At least you could have a ruck but still have a good expectation of getting home afterwards.

They changed their nickname in 1976 I think, Their fans used to chant seagulls after we sang eagles.

Wasn't there something about Palace supporters either having to remove their boots or laces at a designated spot before they could enter the Goldstone ?

Out of order, dangerous and sick really.
