Wilf is probably at his most effective playing as he does . For me his strength is in taking and keeping the ball off the defence , he is our best 'out' ball followed by fast counter attacking .
Playing him further forward would result in longer passes which would leave him frustrated and the ball coming straight back more often .

Of course a change of style that finds Zaha further forward with the ball at his feet makes the above nonsense .

Not sure which Chelsea you have been watching but the whole team tracked back and if they did not the mad coach was screaming and ready to substitute them! And its all good to think we should play further forward to give Wilf a better chance of goalscoring opportunities but to me that sound a bit megalomanic. Put the ball on Benteke's head from a counter attack sound a much easier and safer way to threaten if you ask me!

Generally the best way of getting the maximum out of players with that sort of dribbling ability is to lessen the distance between where they first pick up the ball and the oppositions net. Chelsea's success last season was a lot to do with Conte removing the defensive tracking back duties of Hazard. We did the same with Bolasie a few seasons back. Suarez at Liverpool started off on the wing running past several defenders but not converting many chances that he created for himself, then they moved him inside and he started banging them in for fun. Ronaldo was similar at Manchester United. Messi and Neymar are a bit different because they're playmakers as well as dribblers, they come deeper to receive the ball and can pick out passes which Zaha hasn't really shown he can do yet.

I don't watch a lot of European football but I remember a few years back Robben was doing a lot of tracking back, probably under Guardiola or possibly Heynckes. Maybe Ancelotti uses him differently now he's a bit older.

I think he means positions on the field not an actual position.....

I say to my players, ‘If you give a ball, you give it always with a message. It’s not, ‘Here you have the ball, and you take care of it.’ No. You already know what the next step has to be.”

I love this. They all should be good enough to read the opportunities and lead them with the pass. It drive me bananas when so-called professionals pass the ball to a teammate in a way that stops their progress.

If FdB can instill this in our players, then we are a big step towards "total football". It shouldn't be hard for the defenders to pass to the midfield in a way that leads them into space, so that the ball can move quickly from front to back without possession being risked.

We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football.

he likes to play 433. barca play that with the three up front, you wouldn't call messi or suarez wingers, they play like LS and RS interchanging, and I think that's what he has planned.

But unlike wide players in a 4-5-1 Hazard wasn't the sole figure tasked with tracking back with the opponents full-back, in their 3-4-3 they could create overloads on whichever side the ball was, so you'd have the LCB, LWB and Hazard (LW), with the LCM close behind, pressing that space when defending in their own half. There's no way Hazard had to do as much tracking back under Conte as he was expected to do under Mourinho.

We won't play 3-4-3 but Zaha could feasibly be left higher up on the pitch when we're defending in our half. Puncheon has filled in that space before, Bolasie was often left up field and Puncheon would go left mid when defending.

He did the same for Leicester the previous season - He was such a reliable, high quality defensive midfielder he freed Leicester to push further upfield, allowing Drinkwater and Maraz much more space to feed into Vardy.

I don't think the quality of this player can be overstated. Not just world class, I'd say he's World XI class.

I have read (through links elsewhere in here) that he likes 4-3-3 with the ball, but has the team collapse back to a 4-5-1 without it.

Basically, that's what Big Sam did.

Yes agree I don't think this 'revolution' is necessarily that far away from the football being played towards the end of the season.

Really hope we can just kick on from where we left off.

I think you're getting Conte and Cante mixed up.
