Dougie Freedman is blatantly the obvious choice, as long as he can keep himself from snitching us up. Being on the payroll should stop any temptations.

Bexley Dave Can you hear the Brighton sing? I can't hear a ******* thing! "The most arrogant, obnoxious bunch of deluded little sun tanned, loafer wearing mummy's boys I've ever had the misfortune of having to listen to" (Burnley forum) |

I really don't think that there is a specific pandemic role for a 'Director of football' I think the 'Terms of reference' vary from club to club and perhaps what one does as a 'DOF' at a club is not that far removed from someone who is 'Sporting Director' at another. So a DOF role is what a club or manager deems it should be for that particular club. I've heard some managers pose the question in terms of "What exactly is a Director of football" ?

Exactly my thinking. Whilst moody time at the club was short. It was a successful window at the time. I also think this could help the planning of future managers or players. Just like les reed has done at Southampton. Whilst Les Reed has done a good job at Southampton, there is no guarantee we would get the same benefit.

Oversees various activities at Southampton ie Recruitment, Academy etc etc.He also keeps detailed information about all the major coaches in Europe and perhaps beyond. Only been a manager for a handful of games (Charlton) and only won 1 of them, against Blackburn, who were managed by Mark Hughes.

In theory a Director of Football is like the General Manager in American sports. Part of that job is not just signing players but also hiring managers/head coaches. We don't have one because we've recently favoured managers who want to do everything like Pardew and Allardyce. If we were going to bring in a DOF that would need to happen before the manager was confirmed. Otherwise you're hiring a manager and then instantly complicating things by adding in someone above him. That's how it works at Southampton I believe, Reed has a huge role in finding the new manager to ensure their system and ethos is the same. For what it's worth, I don't think there is a definite right or wrong way to run a club. If you're going to have a DOF though you have to really want that structure, and I'm not sure it suits Parish or the managers he seems to like.
Employee of the month is a good example of how someone can be both a winner and a loser at the same time. |
