When you spend £30 million on a striker paying him £100k a week, you're not looking to just stay up, 14th is a disappointing position and not what the owners would have been targeting. We've not moved on as a club despite some huge signings. We need to consolidate next season, we should have been in the West Brom, West Ham, Southampton bracket of teams in sort of 8th to 12th. We've succeeded in winning Sam's 'table of 7' at the bottom so I guess success has been achieved under him but the season as a whole has been very disappointing and the frailties still exist in the squad once you take out key men.

Well remembered. I'm impressed.

You wanted us to have finished amongst the teams with 45-46 points; we would have done had we held on to our 4 - 3 lead after 90 minutes at Swansea and turned up for one other game, say Sunderland or Burnley at home, or seen out a couple of draws when we lost a goal late on. So we were not a million miles away from that, five points and a handful of goals.

And remember who we had for a manager until Christmas. That's the reason we ended up fighting relegation.

The season was very disappointing for me, but at least we got rid of that idiot Pardew who IMO was the root of the problems. I am sure Sam will make a few more signings to improve the squad and I would like to think top ten is not such a big ask.

Spot on, CF. Although as another keen poster pointed out to me a few days ago when I made a similar 'if only' comment about the Swansea game - if we'd won it 4-3 it might (just might) have been enough to have saved Supa-Al.

I'm hoping that next season we'll see many more home wins.

I've got a bit weary of all those Saturday evenings going home after yet another loss.

But it's just that; if's and buts. If we'd won that we would have had to suffer longer with Pardew with decreasing fitness and another transfer window to mess up the squad. The way things happened were the way things happened, we were in real danger of going down for a long stretch of the season, that's definitely not what the owners would have wanted at the start of the season and having spent a lot in the transfer window.

Lets just put it this way:
Pre-season target - Failed
Revised target after December - Achieved

Given where we were in December-January I'm happy where we've finished.

I think the writing was on the wall for some time, it was a matter of having the replacement lined up. The home win against Southampton maybe hot him a stay of execution, but the decision must've been made with respect to the transfer window on a less reactive basis than a single match, surely. That "thumbs up" thing was cringeworthy, made me think that notwithstanding this game he was getting his jotters before long.

The team ran out of steam the season before. For the season just finished, we started with Benteke and Tomkins as the key improvements. Townsend was bought to replace Bolaise. Our net spend over the Summer was very low considering. We lost Soare and then Wickham soon after for the whole season and suffered many injuries in midfield.
In hindsight the squad was getting older and the additions were not enough. It took 4 quality signings in January to bring the squad up to scratch but it was too late by then to think about a top 10 finish.
I would be surprised if the owners expected more than a mid-table finish and we nearly managed that.

I'd agree with that, although I remember a preseason interview with Pardew where he said this would be a 'transitional' season; when pressed by the interviewer (may have been Lineker even?!) where would be an acceptable placing he said 15th. So we exceeded Pardew's lower-end target at least!

Agreed. Although, 14th is kinda midtable but I take your point.

Let's not forget the misstep that was Mandanda, Parish (I think on hol radio) has said that he was brought to the club to improve the build up from the back, the misstep was compounded by not getting any defensive midfielders comfortable on the ball, we were laughable at times during the first half of the season and our players were exposed from poorly thought out tactics and transfer policy.
