I don't think there's any room for it in this day and age. In 10/15 years time it will be viewed in the same way as racist chanting. There are undoubtedly many people watching the games who are struggling with their identities and to hear songs that make them suppress that is wrong. It's statistically likely that there is a member of our squad or backroom staff who is gay, as fans we shouldn't be insulting our own players and their lifestyle choices. When a player does come out then I think it will curb it even further. This has obviously all come about because of Brighton going up, but from a Palace point of view why would that need to be an insult. We've had far more success than them. I'll be singing about that. Oh dear..... here we go
“This is a crisis, a large crisis.... in fact if you have a moment, it’s a 12 storey crisis, magnificent entrance hall, carpeting throughout, 24 hour portage , and an enormous sign on the roof saying “This , is a large crisis” - Edmund Blackadder |

I'm confused now. Are you Gareth Thomas, the former rugby player or Sion Thomas posing as Gareth Thomas?
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. |

If I can offer an overly intellectual opinion, I did make an interesting note from Randall Collins' book on the micro-sociology of violence recently: 'Despite the use of sexist epithets to insult men they do not like, the hooligans of the 1980s were ardent admirers of Margaret Thatcher and the queen—presumably because these could be used to assert English solidarity and superiority, and to put down respectable educated liberals and leftists; although in Italy they chant ‘f*** the Pope!’, at home they defend the Catholic church, out of hostility to the Anglican establishment (Buford 1993: 95). The pattern is much like that analyzed by Katz (1999) in his study of freeway road rage: curses are brought to one's lips because they fit the particular target one is confronting at the moment; they need not be based on deeply held beliefs, and the repertoire can be inconsistent and contradictory from occasion to occasion.' I'd suggest that homophobic taunts are a similar phenomenon: those chanting mostly aren't deep-seated homophobes, but instrumentalise a background convention of homophobia, as Anthony King has argued in the case of most racist chanting. So I don't think that most people joining in with these chants are particularly hateful; but intent is somewhat irrelevant when the effect is chanting that equates homosexuality with all sorts of negative traits. There's no room for subtlety in a crowd.

The second person to post on here about this bbc documentry. Notice 'gareths' email address on his profile . Used the name sion. Similar to r he address being used by another poster who has been emailing people wanting them to talk on this subject. A good piece of advice someone gave me. Don't let your ego blind you. Approach this with caution. I wonder if similar things are being posted in any other fans forums for other clubs or is it just palace. Easy to get carried away at games when in a crowd with a mob mentality under the influence of alcohol. Don't say you haven't been warned about the attention which is coming out way . I have attached the email I and other members received. Make of it what you will.. And as James has said lots of members on this site know each other in real life and banter with each other. I would take much of what is written here with a big pinch of salt

Personally I think if anyone is going to get offended by a chant or takes anything personally football matches are not the place for them! Too much of a nanny state nowadays watching what you say!! Fattest, sexist, racist, homophobic its all gone to far. Pathetic. I sing what I want and if anyone gets offended they should do one He didn't ask for armchair warriors to spout nonsense on a forum but whether they would be willing to express their views in a BBC documentary. Are you willing to go in front of the cameras and tell the world that you will chant what you want and if they don't like it they can do one or is your eloquence reserved only for anonymous posts on the internet?

Here you go:
It would be wrong to think C Palace is a hotbed of homophobia, notwithstanding the support by some for crass chants about Brighton (just an opinion). My guess would be homophobia amongst football fans is a reflection of society. Its there, but thankfully on a steady decrease. PS:If it's one of your researchers posing on here as you, well done to walesandco for arguably breaching the OFCOM code at stage 1 of your production.
