Yes please. It's all about striking a balance between Sam and Parish. Hopefully Parish is on board with improving every where we need all at once and aiming for top 10.

However, if Parish wants a slower progression and only wants to spend a bit of money, I think Sakho and Wilf signing would guarantee us safety next season (though not much else).

Are you kidding me? We're only a couple of points off finishing top half this season, even with the terrible runs of form, the change of manager, the horrendous injury lists, having championship standard fringe players, losing Wilf to the AFCON-basically in despite of a totally disruptive campaign.

Now, with Sam in charge for a whole season, with a little more luck on the injury front and players returning, do you not think that 45-50 points is achievable? This is before we spend a penny. If we can get in a decent goalkeeper that will see an additional clutch of points added too. If we then added to this replacing say, half the aforementioned sub-standard fringe players, for example Lee, Mutch, Campbell and Delany with, Sako, an attacking mid, competition for Wardy and a decent third choice striker, we're going to push on even further.

Bar getting in Sako from Liverpool, keeping Wilf and finding a reliable number 1 I do not see the difficulty/huge stress in keeping/improving the squad, as generally speaking we should (given a bit of luck) already be in a much stronger position to start the next campaign.

Let's hope there is not buyout clause included, his value will keep increasing year on year so it'd be horrible to lose him for just £40m or something.

Out of interest, as you clearly think that £40m would be taking the p1ss, what do think his true value would be? An actual value that a team should pay in order for it to be fair rather than a "to us he's priceless/ irreplaceable" type answer.

This is the age old debate of what he's worth to a seller vs what he's worth to a buyer. What he's worth to us surely greatly exceeds what a buying club would want to pay, and perhaps might go some way to explain the valuation that was mentioned?

With 18 points between the 7th and 8th team and only 5 points between the next eight teams I think that shows the poor quality of the teams below the top 7

Fee's should reflect the value of the player to the selling club, for intsance Everton got £50m for Stones which was more than he's worth but Southampton must feel robbed for the £35m they got for Mane. But on deals done concerting ourselves if Benteke and Sakho are worth £30m and Bolaise was worth £27m last year then a 24 year old Zaha should be in and around the £50m bracket with transfer fees likely to inflate again this window. Zaha has the 6th (9) highest assists (x3 more than Bolasie last season).

They did it the wrong way.!!

Charlton were in a much different situation to us financially. And to move to the next level, they sold their best players and fired their long-time manager - in favour in Iain Dowie.

The two situations are nothing alike. We are ready to push on, they just wanted to but didn't know how and didn't have the resources.

We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football.

I'd not be adverse to him getting a clause in his contract that made him available for a sensible price if we fail to reach a certain league position. That should entice him a bit, we ought to be convincing him we're moving onward and upward but give him assurances that his career wouldn't be hindered if we went stale or had another relegation battle.

Although I realise I am pre-empting concerns he might not actually have....

Such things are de rigueur in players' contracts these days. Don't sweat it; better to have him with a buy-out or relegation clause in his contract than refuse to accept them and lose him anyway.

Exactly, I am very much in favour of it if that wasn't clear.

Woah, keep calm Sir. I was only making the point that we only need 2 signings (by 2 players who are already at the club) to avoid relegation.

I'm basically saying if we keep the exact same squad we'll win a relegation battle, not saying I don't expect Parish to spend more or crave more.

You've already added a decent goalkeeper to my original point. What I wan to happen is sign Wilf, sign Sakho, goalkeeper, creative midfielder and right back and finish 8th but that might not be the goal.

Can Sam aim for more than just avoiding relegation with the current squad? Yes because he and the first 11 are very talented. But another centre back crisis shows he can have a run of form like Pardew because the squad isn't good enough.

That's what we all wanted, including Wilf I reckon, rather than go to Spurs who will pay less and probably play him less.
