Blame Sky, the 'sleeping satellite' in this conversation.

As it is we spend every penny of the £125mill or so we get now. A route to nothingness long term.

Am sure its closer to £165m tv money, then there is the Sponsorship,Ticket sales and general income we must be close to £180m income and probably spend £110-120m. There was also the lump some invested by the Yanks. Its impossible to stay up on the cheap season on season, might get away with it once or twice but lack of investment finds squads out very quickly. Look at the Three sides at the bottom tried to do it on the cheap.

I know I am just an echo here, but if we improve facilities (stadium, training, hospitality, youth setup) etc year on year whilst finishing 17th every time I'd be happy because it ought to be a foundation for growing long term.

This is the key. The best way to improve the squad over the long term is to improve the growth of revenue outside of the TV money.

Totally agree but next season after 5 years in the Prem and £550,000,000 turnover (incl yanks £50mill) in that time we have achieved pretty much fvck all on all those fronts. Just don't think the will is there.

I'd say, on the evidence, you're right.

If we get the summer transfer window right we can do both.

If you assume Cabaye and Delaney leave, then we are looking for starting 11 right back (moving Joel to backup for RB and 5th choice CB) and a starting midfielder.

You then have to assume that Puncheon doesn't play every game and if he does only has one more season doing that at his age. So you need a starting 11 central attacking midfielder.

A lot hinges on if Zaha, Townsend and Benteke stay. They could all be starters for 3 seasons at least.

So you could potentially sign a top goalkeeper, right back and central midfielder for say 50 million, then use 10 million on cover for the wings and wherever else Sam sees fit. These players can be slightly aged, promising youngsters or simply players not good enough for the first 11 but still add depth to the squad.

Do all that and enforce a transfer age limit of 27 and you can say that Winter transfer windows are off-limits besides loans and the budget for 2019 and 2020 will not be as high as 50 million.

Basically, get it right and you put money towards the stadium and Youth System. Get it wrong like we always seem to and keep throwing the money away in January in the hope of surviving.

Stay up, keep Allardyce and finish 9th - 14th next season.

This is the correct answer.
Allardyce will turn us into a nice boring mid table club that doesn't get in to trouble at the bottom and rarely threatens the top teams.
And for a few years that will suit me just fine.

Personally I think we're standing still, and will continue to do so unless we attract a rich sugar daddy who will be able to catapult us forward. Just about all the top teams have rich owners who are able to finance real progress, not a group of fans who, God bless em, managed to dig us out of the mire in our hour of need.
I hope that we are capable of maintaining mid table mediocrity, with the occasional giant kill and cup run, but without that mythical deep pockets owner we are always going to be looking over our shoulders.
