Am thinking of heading out there and would love some tips! Hi Gordon, To be honest, Dallas ain't all that. Or wasn't when I was there in 2009. Apart from the Kennedy connection there's not much to see although I was lucky when I was there , the Texas State Fair was on and that was fun. Nearby Fort Worth is a better bet - go to Billy Bob's, the largest Honky Tonk in the world and some good restaurants there too. If you are going to Texas, best place I have been is Austin - I would totally recommend there.

I have been there once, which was November 22 1963. I was visiting a mate who had a pidgeon problem at the book warehouse he worked in, so we spent the day shooting pidgeons. A few bullets went astray, we had had a few beers, but we reasoned it's not like that would change history?
Was it lunchtime matt?

Fort Worth is quaint, but tiny. Austin's slogan is "Keep Austin Weird" (Dallas' slogan is "Keep the Weirdos in Austin"). It's the self-appointed music capital of the world, has amazing bars, restaurants (and women), is a college town so the night life is buzzing and it has Franklin's Barbecue which will change your life (https://franklinbarbecue.com/). There's fantastic craft beer and liquor in Austin. Just west of there is the Hill Country with its fantastic scenery and surprisingly good wine. Just south of there (about 1 1/2 hours drive) is San Antonio which is where you'll find The Alamo. Don't get put off by seemingly long drives. I have driven to San Antonio and back in a day for lunch. Our roads are designed for easy long haul driving, so 3 hours is really nothing (and infinitely better than trying to fly). We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football. |

Edited by Ray in Houston (31 Mar 2017 5.00pm) I second that.Austin is a great place, far better IMHO than Dallas or Houston,Brilliant music scene. Relaxed, tolerant atmosphere:you wonder how it can be in Texas!Visit a real Honky Tonk at the Broken Spoke... If you go there,go down and visit New Braunfels on a Saturday night, about an hour on the way to San Antone, great country music dancing in Gruene Hall,a 19th century beer hall built by German immigrants. And,if you go on to San Antone (about 2 hours south of Austin),then take a day trip to Langtry,on the Rio Grande, next to Mexico. The town (village?) named after Lily Langtry by the real life Judge Roy Bean that they made a film about..
