I just think his price tag is such a heavy weight at a club of our size. It's the equivalent of, say, Arsenal shelling out 100m-150m. He just HAS to be great and he hasn't been. You can make argument's he's been decent...but not as good as we needed him to be. There was a moment in the first half when he was squabbling with Wilf. Wilf had pulled it back and tek didn't attack the space. Tek was saying 'you should have put it on my head' and Wilf felt he should have attacked the space. Wilf was probably right. But the fact is, tek blatantly has zero confidence with his feet. It's actually sad to see. I hope SA can bring him more confidence. That would be outstanding.

Noticed from the very start of the season that he seems to have lost the ability to pick the ball up and run at players with it. Odd how a player of his calibre can just stop doing this all of a sudden.

He was not bought for his work rate off the ball but to score goals, this is in short supply. It's his all round game which, needs vast improvement. As I have said previously he has gone from being a beast to being afraid to run at players and a shadow of his Villa form. Whether this is down to confidence which, can hopefully return through hard work and good man management or that form being left in the past never to return, who knows and only time will tell! I have seen him get into great goal scoring postions only to see Wilf or Andros shoot or take on another man. I have no doubts that if we got them to release the ball a bit quicker and to look up now and again and play to his strengths he would get a lot more goals. It must be frustrating.

He's already scored comfortably more goals than any of our players did last season and is comfortably top goal scorer this season. I'd still like to see him score more though.

I think Benteke's been decent for us... but as others have pointed out, for £30 million, we'd maybe expect better. I think the issue is that because we have had a poor season all round, Benteke's confidence has tanked. If we were already safe from relegation I think Tekkers would be much better. He did look quality the first few games after we got him for instance. We have to play Benteke as we don't really have strength in depth with the unfortunate timing of the injuries as well as Campbell not really being up to it.Should we stay up though, we'd have tasty options up front. I see Benteke as turning it round,

I think people are basing this off one goal he scored for Villa against us where he carried the ball for ages as we backed off. If you check out the stats on Whoscored, he dribbles as much as he has ever done at Villa. If Townsend's cross in the first half vs Watford had been a foot lower Benteke was there to head it straight in. Just a bit unlucky. Second half he was caught in two minds between taking a touch and shooting. The best striker at our club and i'll always be happy to see him in the team

Good management from Big Sam, publicly praising a guy who is short of confidence and isn't quite fitting. Pep is doing something similar with Aguerro. For sure at 30m Benteke should be a better player than he is and have a far far better touch, definitely not the player who was a beast at Villa

Back on topic, disagree OP. The more important factors in our upturn have been the acquisition of a more effective defence and a left side. Especially the latter. We were trying to play a more entertaining expansive game [to please the Americans?] but without an effective left side to provide balance. With such fine margins, the results went against us by the odd goal with confidence slowly eroding... and eventually free-falling. Or, as the more simple minded posters on here would say: it was all Pardew's fault. Truthfully, I have no idea if Pardew had stayed whether he would have acquired the same players and re-balanced the team thereby achieving the same results. I suspect [whether his fault or not] that the issue may have become so toxic that you needed any decent experienced manager to provide a fresh approach. All hypothetical. As for Benteke, he needs to score goals to justify his price tag. Otherwise, he is just going to fall into the category of millions of strikers we have had on the pay roll who do little more than defend from the front.

Agree with this and sums up my thoughts exactly. Paying £30 mill for a striker was too much for the balance in our club ( nothing personal to CB ) but i'll eat my words if he scores the goals this sesson that gets us the points needed to stay up. But hes gotta get back to being a dangerous striker and quickly before we run out of winable games. COYP

Our fans always make scapegoats out of players who are perceived as expensive. 9 league goals at this stage of a mostly awful season is respectable. He'll be class for us if he stays.
