They don't ignore speeding in a 30. U husband got caught by a camera doing 37 in a 30 and got a fine , 3 points with an sp30 code. Premium went up straight away once the insurance company were informed. Only recently come off the licence

I suspect that most motorists in the UK have been caught, and hope that when I renew my insurance I will be regarded as the average motorist.

Based on what they said in the course when I did it that would absolutely no sense as the huge majority of accidents were in 30mph zones?

Do the course. It isn't that long. It gets you out of 3 points and insurers have to ask you directly otherwise you don't have to disclose it. And it might actually make a difference. I found some of it quite eye opening.

I've been offered these courses, but wouldn't waste my time being patronised all day by someone half my age who probably does a fraction of the mileage I do a year and pay more money than the fine for the privilege, I just take the 3 points on the chin and I always manage to find a cheaper quote on insurance even with the points, maybe if I was on 9 points I'd have to reconsider!!

I know one thing for sure, any amount of points does make a difference, I've tried quotes in Price comparison websites over the years declaring my points and then as a matter of interest without them and the price does drop without!!

I've been offered these courses, but wouldn't waste my time being patronised all day by someone half my age who probably does a fraction of the mileage I do a year and pay more money than the fine for the privilege, I just take the 3 points on the chin and I always manage to find a cheaper quote on insurance even with the points, maybe if I was on 9 points I'd have to reconsider!!

Each to their own, but I actually learnt some interesting things on the course. The course isnt about idiots doing 99mph on a motorway, its all about those 'just over' the limit (hence you being offered the course rather than just given points) and despite my being in the motor trade for well over 25 years, I learnt a hell of a lot. The course I went on was run by the AA with 2 experienced drivers (quoted as driving around the country every week) and in a hotel with 4 rooms being used for the courses.

They were FAR from patronising, just stated facts, showed videos and asked questions. None of it was personal, just thoughts on the facts being presented.

The course isnt about idiots doing 99mph on a motorway, its all about those 'just over' the limit (hence you being offered the course rather than just given points) and despite my being in the motor trade for well over 25 years, I learnt a hell of a lot.

I don't know it all, but with 36 years driving experience with the above mileage every year for the last 20 I don't need to be told that 'speed kills' I'm experienced enough to know!! Maybe I would learn something and if it was good for you, then fine, but I won't be bothering unless I'm on 9 points, which at the moment is exactly 9 points away so I must be doing something right I guess.

But hey, thanks for being as patronising as those I thought I'd encounter!! You only need tell the insurer if they ask the question and even then it would be treated no harsher than having the conviction.

I've done one and it was 2 hours longer than it needed to be. But it was fairly interesting. Most interesting was one of the attendees had been done for doing 72mph in a 70mph zone! And they brought along the letter to prove it.

Thanks all for the replies.

I'm going to do the course. For no other reason than I am going on holiday, and need my licence to hire a car.

Nobody seems to know if the insurance company can find out who has taken a course. So, unless I am asked, I will say nothing.

I have only had a clean licence for about 8 years, and would like it to stay that way. Had a UT10 endorsement on my provisional, and various others since. Then they introduced points. I had enough of those to make a cricket score. Now I am older and (hopefully) wiser, I want to keep my licence. And keep it clean.
