Really don't understand this. His work rate yesterday was good all game. He was a threat every time the ball got near him. His link up play was pretty good. He hesitated once on his weaker foot, but that was a chance he created all by himself. He can't be expected to chase every lost cause for 90 minutes, he needs more support. Yesterday when the midfield dropped deep he had to go back to picking and choosing when to chase. In the first half when he had Wilf, townsend, Cabaye and Punch supporting him, he was a le to really pressure their back three. ^^^THIS^^^ and change the thread title to: Benteke (we need more TO him)

As I've said before we play a system that relies on a no.10 yet haven't had a proper one since Chamakh got injured. Benteke is on his own nearly all game and like it or not he's not a channel runner. We bought a target man centre forward, not an AJ type centre forward, so he cannot be criticised for not being AJ.

We bought a target man who will hold up play and bring others in, which he does regularly when the service is there. A player who will also nod in goals from crosses, which he has done all season. Yesterday, he created chances for himself and was a threat - some could argue he should've had a goal. People are saying playing Fraizier Campbell or Connor Wickham instead of Benteke... are you having a bubble? Wickham was notoriously crap for us last season to the point of people whinging about him every single game and his lack of aerial threat. I'm not gonna even bother with Fraizier Campbell, because he will be an okay striker for us next season if we get relegated.

In the second half, we went into panic defense mode and played far too deep, leaving Benteke totally isolated for long spells against a back three. Even a AJ type would have trouble closing down three defenders, but as mentioned this isn't Benteke's game.

The amount of people who were slagging him off last season for not trying was ridiculous. Benteke wasn't about in the second half because we had 10 men behind the ball trying to secure a massive win. Anyone who has played football with 10 men behind the ball knows how hard it is for any striker to do anything. Take away goals from a striker? Take goals away from 90% of strikers and you have a nothing player, because that is what they do. What did you expect us to get? Didier Drogba? Look at the top 10 goalscorers in the PL this season: only two of them have more than 4 assists this season (Sanchez and Costa).

This is why fans love Gayle but other than goals bought nothing to Palace and as you suggested costa and Sanchez bring little else but they have more possession. Obviously Benteke a great player, you don't have constiency scored 15 goals per season and be s***. I would like to see him win more free kicks and take us up the pitch. When we are defending deep like Murray did.

What is it about some fans these days? Are they not happy unless they've got a scapegoat to get on the back of? Benteke was class despite being pretty isolated all game. Held the ball up well (not every single time, but well), looked confident with the ball at his feet around the box, carved out chances for himself and was winning headers in the area despite being a lone striker against three centre halves. Chased down, did his job defending set pieces and looked very much interested all game. WTF do some people actually expect, even for the money we paid in today's crazy market? Well I think Simon's head is large; always involved in espionage. (Name that tune) |
