Delightful bunch who put an end to the draft thus saving the lives of thousands of young men.

And our forefathers fought fascism, being enabled again at this moment by those who seek to wreck, not smelly beards and crusty hair.

But whom conversely espoused the usage of drugs and promiscuity which, funnily enough, killed, and f***ed up, a load of people and continues to do so until today.

Because naivety is always dangerous.
We would all like the words of Lennon's Imagine to be a reality but by a certain age most of us realise that it ain't never gonna happen.
Then there are people who like to continue living in a delusion into their forties and beyond.

Is there a more discredited 'sub genre' than the so-called hippie movement?

The liberal counter culture brought us the curse of casual drug usage, the death sentence that is 'free love', crap music and the evil that is the challenge of soceital norms by long haired, godless, bead wearing ne'er-do-wells.

Hippie culture continues to ruin modern day life, despite the best efforts of Reagan, Thatcher, Nixon, the Altamont free concert and punk rock to strangle it. From bellends like Russell Brand stating he will bring his daughter up in a 'gender neutral' manner to the 'not in my name' oxygen thieves whom need a healthy dose of reality rather than sitting in their manicured hands denouncing whatever the government does as 'evil', the hippie agenda is still be perpetrated by people whom should know better.

I would like schools to teach that the hippie movement was regrettable and evil in order for future generations not to repeat the mistakes of the past. We could then attempt to blot this unfortunate stain of human history from memory.

Peace out man. Turn on, tune in, drop out and all of that jazz.

Not compared to the Vietnam war. Which funny enough also involved lots of sex with prostitutes, rape and drug use, that f**ked up a load of people.

I'm not sure they were naïve because they were 'hippies' but more because they were mostly young and looking to form a different culture and life, in a society that would never let them, and kind of demands its own strict adherence to social norms.

They might have been naïve but they weren't the ones beating people in the streets to protect racial intolerance, fighting wars in Vietnam, propping up Fascist South American murder Juntas etc. The State back then was brutal in its treatment of protestors, as well - especially in the South.

Thank f**k for them. They really helped change the US for the better.

Did they? I'd say key people like Truman and Johnson moved civil rights forward significantly and they certainly weren't hippies.
Vietnam seems like a mistake now because we are not in a battle to restrict the spread of Communism. Wanting peace was hardly a new thing and it was also a position which did not properly consider the complexity of world politics. CND was another prime example of that sort of naive idealism.
It'd easy and understandable to sympathies with movements that aspire to high ideals but it's another to put them in charge.

Bullplop.

1.4m to 4m people died in Vietnam, depending on whom you believe.

Tens of millions have died through drug addiction, through drug use, through the drug trade and as a result of unprotected intercourse.

The hippies have a lot to answer for.

They're no friends to barbers. Who thinks about the barbers in all of this?

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

What a load of old crap.

Hippies were middle class bellends who moved from comfortable, middle class areas, got ripped to the tits on whatever they could smoke, then moved onto smack, were too w***ered to consider 'consciousness' and then squatted, took over poor neighbourhoods and took free healthcare away from the urban poor.

Yes! Oh for the world to be as it was before those damned hippies! When no one took drugs, or ever, EVER had unprotected sex, no, but followed the safe and sensible practices of their Christian God, double bagged AND pulled out before the seed did spread forth!

I know it's a little ironic on this thread, but you reaaallly could do with smoking a joint and chilling out, maybe even try a bit of non-missionary 'free loving' and see how it goes

If punk ever happened I'd be preaching the law, instead of listenin to Lydon lecture BBC4

More revisionism.
None of that had anything to do with hippies. Those things were more about the pill, social changes and education. Hippies were a symptom, not the cause.
