I only think Puncheon should be taken out fo the side for a week or two, he's been asked to do a deeper creative role but there is no mobile or effective tackler next to him so his creative game is being spoiled because he has to help out Cabaye or Ledley next to him. If we can get Milivojevic shielding the defense then either Puncheon or Cabaye can get forward a bit more and into goal scoring opportunities. Ledley can't function in this division any longer, Puncheon just needs to get his spark back.

Sakho: Maybe we need big characters like him. At this point, nothing can damage us further you’d think. I don’t know if he’s captain material but hopefully he communicates better than Dann or Tomkins.

I don't think changing the Captain is a good idea at this point of the season...in fact I think it would be a terrible idea. The team needs bringing together and the reality is there are not exactly many players who are Captain material that are fit and playing well regularly. I prefer Wards short passing over Kelly's long no hope boots into the box any day of the week and Kelly should no longer make the squad. As soon as Townsend knew he wasn't going back to Newcastle he has been playing better and I have been a big critic of him so yes if that persists then his second chance has arrived. Tomkins needs a huge slap...is the arrival of Sakho too much pressure for him to take? To his credit Delaney doesn't seem to struggle with the mental side of the game as much as the other players...if only he were a few years younger! Wilf is awesome and Benteke will score goals if we provide him with the right service. I think it is time to go 4-3-3 GK Ward Milivojevic Zaha Subs: GK, Tomkins, Delaney, Flamini, Schlupp, Punch, Reme Edited by Hudsoneagle (07 Feb 2017 8.07pm) I like that line up. Milivojevic to hold, McArthur box to box and Cabaye the creative spark who gets to roam a bit more than he's ever really been able to since joining us. The problem I think is that now is probably not the time to change the system AGAIN. The back 3 clearly can work under Sam if implemented properly like it did at Bournemouth but it takes immense concentration and discipline - 2 factors I just do not see in this team anymore, a real shame.

Either way as I said I think changing system at this point is probably the last thing we need, probably better off mastering the current one (if at all possible).

I agree. Mr Vanilli was brought in to fulfil a specific function so we all have to hope that he's up to the job and the sooner he's chucked in at the deep end the better

I see what you mean, a change in system isnt always the best idea but I have to say I dont think this system suits us and in the past 3 years the only system that we have actually mastered to any degree is 4-3-3

Formation wise, I just think it's a case of understanding who we're playing and having the choice of 3 or so variations of our formations. IMO Sunderland got the better of us because they were more familiar with 3-4-3, their 3 at the back kept Benteke quiet and Defoe could just run rings around our 6'2" CB's and cause confusion. Our passing was particularly slow from the back so we allowed Sunderland to block off the passing lanes to Wilf. The manner of the loss wasn't down to the tactics though, that was all on the players themselves. I think as a general rule we should now go 3 at the back when the opponents are used to playing a 4 at the back themselves. I think we should try to always go with a proper 2 up front when playing against a back 3 ourselves because Benteke just gets isolated. 2 up front works both attacking wise and defensively; your 2 strikers stop the opponents building out from the back, forcing their play out wide plus you can play a more pressing game, attacking wise you should be able to pin their defense quite deep, you can go direct and you've got more bodies in the box from crosses. Against Everton we held them off quite well until Remy went off for Lee, after that with only 1 striker they started to push us deeper. The goal eventually came because of other circumstances too but taking off a striker hurt us in that instance defensively as well as attacking wise IMO.
