Well, he has a pedestrian defence in front of him so perhaps concluded they were never going to get back and make a challenge so felt he had to come out ? Don't know his thinking for sure, but he was a long way from goal ! That's fine to come out, but he must win the ball. Against Chelsea he came stopped and Costa scored. Does not want to get hurt.

Both Kelly and Ward drop behind the center halves, and play the opposition onside far too often. It must be frustrating as hell for Dann or Delaney constantly to be yelling at Ward to push up when Kelly has dropped off, or vice versa. Likewise with the marking.
If you come to a fork in the road, take it. |

Lack of pace and mobility at the back causes players to not want to push up leaving spaces behind them.

Absolutely, which is why we should have dealt with the problem over the last couple of transfer windows and not claimed we had sufficient cover at the back, when even the most ardent AP fan could see we were short.

No attempt to stop the cross. Antonio had all the time in he world. And Ward, again doesn't mark or get close to the attacker. The back four is a shambles and the midfield little better. And as for the attack.....

Edited by Willo (15 Jan 2017 1.44pm) We have three center halves and two full backs. The latter are both poor, and we have no pace at center half. Throw in the fact that our left wing was not replaced and that we didn't have cover there, and it is no wonder we are a mess. Any team would struggle if you removed their left full back and left wing and did not have any decent replacement. Throw in an entire year of poor league results, and it is no wonder we are in such a mess. Alllardyce really does have his work cut out. Even Rafa could not save Newcastle.

Was watching on a tiny screen but could see straight away that Ward had messed up by not marking Carroll. Yes his strike was a thing of beauty but FFS we have to make it difficult for the opponent! I can't forgive us making it a training ground for other teams to try their luck. This goes way back - remember the Spurs wonder goal Dele Alli scored last season? Awful closing down and non-marking. Look at the build up to Giroud's scorpion kick. We gave the ball away when attacking and had nothing in place as cover. really? the grioud / alli / carroll goals were all fantastic. its amazing how many people on this site watch to much MNF & think they are gary neville.

I don't have Sky so not "to (sic) much MNF" for me, pal. But leaving the barbs to one side...yes they were all very well taken goals. I watched Alli's goal in real time and was screaming for the team to close down Spurs' players - we were statues for the fiver passes before the strike. In comparison, remember that goal Fulham scored against us under Holloway? That was sublime- we didn't have a chance but our defending couldn't be faulted.

Yes it was a wonder goal made easier for Carroll due to a lot of inept defending. However, maybe he should have already been sent off for that awful and late challenge on Ward in the first half. And as for the first goal, don't get me started on Hennessey. What on earthg was he doing right out there. How he is an international along with Townsend, when Wilf has to go to Africa to be recognised, is beyond me Edited by Steve T (15 Jan 2017 12.44pm) i'm certainly no fan of Hennessy but he was virtually on his line!
