Petros and using statistics to recruit players

I don't know the exact stats, but I know that Opta record all sorts of data for every match. I've seen articles that have a range of expected whatever, usually written in the for xY (i.e. expected goals = xG).

One thing they do is, say a player takes a shot from the 18 yard line, the probability of him scoring is based upon all the shots taken from that position.

I saw an article not long ago in which this the bloke attributed a value to each pass a player does, and whether or not it adds or retracts value to the attacking team's build-up. It all goes way beyond the "x player has a pass completion of 95%"

But, to be honest, I'm very s*** at explaining all of this kind of stuff, so I'd recommend searching for this stuff online, as they're explained much better than I ever could.
