Nice bloke and i do recall hearing he wasn't well but I'm not going to rewrite history because hes died. He was an excellent manager at Watford and then there was villa, but he was a basic and awful England manager. RIP

RIP I don't think it's fair for his legacy to be his England stint, he took over after the success (some would call it) of Italia 90 and almost every manager since has presided over major underachievement Would Capello be remembered for being a poor England boss?

This is sad news. I had the privilege of chairing a Financial Services dinner some years ago with Graham Taylor seated beside me as guest speaker. He had just taken a role at Aston Villa as Director of Football and of course I took the opportunity to tell him I was a lifelong Palace supporter. Our connection with Villa goes far deeper than that.

A great football man and top bloke and a sad loss. Treated extremely badly by the media during his time as England manager - the same media that no doubt will be paying respects tomorrow in the newspapers. I'm sure his family will have no need for that. Also one of few England managers to give chances to players at unfashionable clubs. Geoff Thomas, Andy Gray, Ian Wright, John Salako, Nigel Martyn to name a few.

You're right Matthau and I did give Graham the fuller detail ( that Edmund Goodman had moved from Aston Villa to become Secretary at Crystal Palace - with his one wooden leg etc) but kept my post shorter for the sake of brevity.

Two things that I liked from Taylor: when constantly criticized about his 'boot it upfield and see what happens' tactics he retorted - 'what's wrong with a long pass?', and he also had the nerve to substitute Monsieur Smug from MOTD.

And working with Elton, must have been quite an exciting time to be part of Watford. He will be missed, particularly at Five Live. Edited by Slimey Toad (12 Jan 2017 8.22pm)

An excellent coach and manager - England excepted. What he did with Watford wont be repeated for a long time.

This is a great emotional tribute to Graham Taylor. [Link] As Slimey Toad mentioned earlier about long pass/ball it talks about him describing a 'long ball' as a 'long pass'. I can't remember the player that's quoted but he says if he does a long pass to a player they say what a great pass that was, not a long ball. Talks about how enthusiastic he was about bringing families into football with Watford. What he achieved at Watford was excellent and don't forget his success at Villa. The treatment he had (and other people) from the media was/is disgusting but that's how they work & how they get away with it is also disgusting.
The pyramid to beat all pyramids!! Find out what team is in which division, eg which division is Coppull United in? |
