Who would pay silly money for Townsend? Apart from us.

Middlesbrough allowing him to leave on loan.

We're crying out for a natural left sided winger, could do a lot worse than Downing. Would not be a very inspiring signing but he's added to his game with experience and would settle quicker than a player from Ligue 1 for example.

Would come without a transfer fee and his wages would be set or negotiated with Middlesbrough. Sam mentioned the wage cap issue so this would be an ok deal where we can also bring in others.

Cue all the predictable 'If he's not good enough for Middlesbrough'...

He isn't playing for boro because he doesn't fit in to karanka's style of play, that being very defensively minded.(not that that is a bad thing) My biggest concern with downing is his pace, or lack of it!! Not bad at set pieces but is that worth filling a loan place for?!?!

I would say defo worth a loan place. BFS knows how to use him, including in the middle. With Wilf's absence we need an instant replacement, who could slot right in and do a decent job. I think Downing could do that.

It looks like we're out to buy a left back. After left back, left wing should be our next priority, Flamini has become an option at CDM and Remy has finally played his first match, so we can hope that those positions are sort of covered now. You never know, Downing could come as a central attacking midfielder and Puncheon pushed out to the left.

Doesn't play for Boro because he has a side to him that has meant he has fallen out with his management. Gibson bought him back to Boro rather through nostalgia more than anything else. Think a little bit like Parish bringing Zaha back from Man Utd but Downing has come back and caused all sorts of problems behind the scenes in the dressing room at Boro. Karanka does not like his attitude.

Big Sam had him playing great for westham, England call up I believe. It's not very exciting but sometimes these are the type signings that work out for palace, look at damo he was an Ipswich reject!

If some of the rumours from today are true then it would seem Chambers from Arsenal is the more likely player who could join us on loan.

I am not saying we need or should get Chambers but there are strong rumours that we are winning the race to get him on loan and we can only make one more loan signing from a prem club am I right?

When I first read a rumour about Chambers I thought why we don't need him at Palace...but then I thought how many Prem capable full backs to we have in the squad???

Just one! Ward is really the only capable full back we have because Kelly and Fryers are all over the place and I think need to be sold if possible.

In some respects Ward has become the perfect back up player at full back now that he can play either side. Sam did mention though recently didn't he that 3 centre backs isn't enough cover so it seems he wants a centre back too.

Downing a bit past his best, but I can see the logic in it.

We've just lost two wingers to AFCON and one with international experience is available.

An actual left winger, rather than a left-footed one who wants to play on the right. Could add balance to the side and is decent at set pieces.

Assuming the wages aren't an issue then as a short term solution - at least while we figure out our long term plans for the left and right wing - seems viable.

I might be wrong, but didn't he used to provide service to Benteke at Villa?

Seems somewhat drab signing but I'll look forward to being proven wrong.

Personally think Ashley Young would have more to offer.

Guess can't go wrong if it's a loan.

Positive is it looks like Sam is trying to balance out wings after the disappointment Townsend has proved on that side.

Could be good signing but somewhat unsure.

Just read he made guy be on £90k/wk.

Surely Young would be on less with more likelyhood United would subsides his wage than £90k for Downing...

Although it's only half a season.

Downing is such a dull player to be linked with however, much like Robert Snodgrass, could be a very sensible acquisition.

Building our attack around Benteke requires wingers who are willing to put balls in time and again and that is something that both aforementioned players can provide. They both also possess much needed ability with a dead ball and have the capacity to play a more central role should we look to play someone else out wide.

We needed good crosses and as unspectacular as this is, it may just work.
