Close to it if the sole purpose of the academy is to provide a stream of ready made Premier League players for the First team. Sadly to do that we would need a lot of investment to bring our academy up to the top level. Even then, we all know that anyone outstanding would probably be torn from our grasp by one of the big boys for next to nothing.

Fortunately that is not the sole purpose of the academy and it still looks to be a very good grounding for young footballers from the local area to get the training they need for a career in the lower levels of football.

So, it's still a fantastic service to the community and for Palace it is, at minimum, a good insurance policy if we were to get relegated. Let's face it, the chances are that at least one of the current age groups already in the academy will 'graduate' in a season where we are back in the Championship and more likely to make use of their services. Definitely not a waste of time.

in recent years we have had the following come thru it

clyne

kai-kai

thats probably only bettered than southampton in recent years.

its the nature of being in the promised land that the numbers would dwindle, but if kai-kai actually gets a chance and comes good then obviously its worth it, and it shows the lads in the academy theres a chance of breaking through if your good enough.

all be it because of injury but in recent games i am a little suprised none of the lads who made the bench wernt even given a few minutes as you dont know unless their given a chance, and with all due respect the likes of mutchh/campbell/sako have had theirs and some.

if we end up going down then obviously the real worth will be highlighted more as we will be able to give more players a chance.

Throw in

Scannell
Grabben
Foderingham
Wiggins
To name a few there's plenty still earning a decent living out of the game

Do not think Warmock did that Braunie.
We were going to build a team around him.
Then he took the Spurs money and ran.
Warnock gave Clyne his chance.

We don't really have many young players that are ready to play in the first team apart from the likes of Dreher, Husin, Croll and possibly Phillips and Wynter. The other players in the academy are not doing too well at the moment, the only ones who to me seem decent are Andre Coker, Jason Lokilo and Sam Woods but they all have a fair way to go before they are ready to play in the first team

We are going to Bolton today and from what BFS is inferring we are fielding a side of squad players with premier league experience I remember back in the rose tinted spectacle days of 77 and 78 when lads such as Sansom,Fenwick,Nicholas and Gilbert to name but a few were deemed good enough to be given the opportunity from our youth team set up with no fancy Dan academy .Surely given the dire displays by current first team squad together with injuries etc if only to assess the current crop of young talent today might have been the day to assess their talents as nothing to lose and might show something to Sam

Players of that calibre don't come around often, with also the end of Combination League, it is hard to get Academy players through to the first team, but its worth keeping.
Do you think Man Utd are closing theirs, as they don't produce a Beckham, Butt, Giggs and Neville Bros every 5 years.

Our academy isn't efficient by the looks of it. Our catchment is truly enormous, when you think about it, but our academy isn't that great; we're in the third tier of the development leagues.

Moses was sold six years ago and neither Williams nor Kaikai have set the world alight which leaves just Zaha and Clyne as success stories since CPFC 2010 took over

Think we only have academies to produce young players to sell and make a bit of money and occasionally a big bit of money. Unless it's a real standout talent they aren't given a run and that's the only way you ever find out if a player is actually good enough.
I've said it for years, but the amount of money doesn't help produce players because the managers feel they can't take the risk of losing the money through relegation. Other countries the money is minimal or only the top 2/3 clubs get the majority of the money, so they have to blood players at a young age. That means by 19/20 these players have got about 100+ games under their belts in first team competitions in front of big crowds against men with something at stake. So blood a 19 year old youth prospect or pay £3m odd for a proven first team starter from France, Spain, Germany, Eastern Europe etc. Really it's a no brainer.

The academy isn't currently fit for purpose. It was thrown out of the Training Ground about two seasons ago and has been using the Beckenham GOALS facility since. In its first season there the pitch was so poor there were large holes in the turf. We currently have several portacabins adjacent to the permanent buildings, but frankly for what we are supposed to be it's nothing short of an embarrassment.

Any decent facilities for them at a new training ground must be several years away at least. So whilst we have some good players like Sam Woods & Luke Dreher under development we aren't likely to get or keep a lot more.

In those circumstances we are unlikely to get the outstanding talent as we did in the 70s and 80s until at least the mid-2020s.

Taking the bungy jump since 1964. Never to see John Jackson in a shirt again

Sorry to see Lee Hills go, did we ever see Alex Marrow? We did January 2013

The academy has been left alone really since 2010 & it was Pardew who insisted it needed its own facilities, coaches etc to mirror what he put in place when at Southampton. I've a couple of mates down there who reckon their training facilities & academy were the things AP got right in his tenure.

Let's hope we follow through & get ours up to scratch sooner rather than later.

I can see why poster might suggest the academy isn't great but then again when I think of the last, say, 10-15 years we've not done too bad.

Foderingham (GK, now at Rangers, arguably not academy).

Clyne (RB, England and Liverpool)
Wiggins (LB, but for injury would have had a great career)
Innis (CB, injuries and personal issues disguise obvious talent)
Struggling for another CB

Routledge (RW, still effective in top flight)
Watson (CM, Still in top flight)
Williams (CM, unluckiest player in the world, potential there)
Zaha (LW/RW, need i say anything?)

Moses (CF, playing him up top to accommodate others tells its own story)
Grabban (Not spectacular, still commanded big fees).

Now that isn't a bad first 11. Add the likes of Bostock who is finally realising his potential, Soares (over rated in my eyes but had a good career) etc then we've not done too badly.
