I know Arsenal are arguably the BEST team in the division with the ball
BUT
We were the worst Ive seen in a while with the ball yesterday
Terrible
And Zaha once again was giving it away far too cheaply
I thought we looked very good v Watford , but yesterdays performance needs to improve drastically

Zaha seems to lose all his assets against the top 6. He has no sense of direction. With his pace he should believe in himself and set off down the wing like an express train. He kept turning back. Hope that wasn't the orders. I just hope he is on fire against Swansea. It is a massive game for us. Win and we are ok. Lose and we are in a bad place.

Funny. They seemed to have all of that 3 games ago. They played very well. How have they lost confidence and self belief since then?

Just curious.

I'm pretty sure we lost against united with Wayne Hennesey being our man of the match? We also had a stronger team out.

How about we give BFS a fair chance, afterall Pardew had a year of poor form before parting ways.

This. A team lacking confidence and a team drilled in pressing with confidence doing it and able to damage after succeeding is only going to go one way.

We are looking at the wrong match to gauge the situation.

However if it was Pardew managing the team against Arsenal you'd have been on here spitting venom & vitriolic abuse.

The top 6 are better at pressing! Townsend and Zaha get doubled up on as soon as they have possession of the ball. You can't expect our wingers to chase back to help the full backs, defend, and then sprint the length of the pitch to attack every time.

They have to pick and choose their runs, which you have to expect considering the defensive cover they provide.

People complain about both Wingers being greedy with the ball and not passing, when they do look to pass people complain about them not taking the ball further forward. Either way they can't win!

Pardew was given a year to refine the squad and his tactics, he deserved every criticism for the underachievement.

There's a massive difference between taking a view on Pardew, who'd been abysmal in the PL for a year, and Allardyce, who's been here for two games, one of them Arsenal away, and you know it. Pardew was quite rightly sacked, and should have been a lot earlier and more than deserved the criticism. It's far too soon to judge a new manager, and not after one training session (Watford away) and definitely not by Arsenal away after a week, with half the team crocked.

Playing out on the left he kept turning inside on his stronger right-foot.Nothing wrong with that - Hazard does it all the time playing down the left !

If Zaha was playing down the right, I think he would be inclined to be more positive and take his marker on down the outside. But of course Townsend is more effective down the left ! All about getting the balance right for the team and Allardyce is good at this.

My thoughts too - I reckon Allardyce will say to Townsend "we've tried it your way now we're gonna try it mine" & switch flanks for tonight's game.

I think one thing missing from all these post-Arsenal threads is the fact that Wenger got his tactics spot on against us. Playing wing-backs and 2 wide men nullified our only real attacking threats as our lack of a no 10/CAM was clear for all to see. You stop our wingers, you stop our attack - it's really not rocket science.

I'm far from a Pardew apologist but it may be why he tried Yala down the middle toward the end of last season (something even Koeman has done this season)with little impact.

Arsenal were in top form and made us look like a making up the numbers premiership team. We did well to only lose 2-0, and I thought defensively we played pretty well - especially considering we have a must not lose game tonight.

I feel for anyone who paid to go to the Arsenal game, but we got schooled in pressing, quick tempo and possession football, by a team for which any of their subs could walk into our first 11.

Absolutely correct.

Get tight to them, double up on them and they have precious little else to offer !

Supply line from wide to Benteke is cut-off and they have to resort to pumping hopeful balls up to him in the air and a defender assigned to mark him has an advantage as he can attack the ball with his head running on to it.

Maybe need to mix it up with attacking full-backs, so the wingers can offer a different dimension by cutting in and drawing the opposition full-back inside leaving his own ful-back some space on the outside.Just a bit of variety and a 'Plan B' when necessary.

Having said all of this our real failing has been conceding goals and sometimes it's not just about the goalkeeper or defenders it is a collective thing and fitness levels do enter the equation - tiredness not only results in not being able to compete physically it can also affect concentration.
