I am not sure how much control Pardew has with transfers. The impression I have is that we did not get all our targets in the summer.

I reckon if we lose against Watford he'll have as much control over January transfers as Father Christmas does because he'll be out on his arse.

They have stated that AP tells SP which positions need strengthening. SP goes over the list of targets the scouts have identified and asks AP which he'd prefer. SP then goes after those players. SP also said that if there is a gap in the squad, he has bought in players himself for the manager. E.g. Sako was a last minute deal, and I think he said CYL was too (but I am not certain of the last one).

going back a few years now but how did Freedman get his signings so right? Pardew's signings seem to lack very much imagination and how they fit into the team seems like an afterthought, just look at Townsend.

I don't know. However, SP has been pretty clear about this previously. He has also said that the system had much improved over time: think of the summer of 2013.

Dougie brought in Bolasie, Murray, Jedinak, Ward, and Delaney. But he also brought in Moritz, Blake, Dikgacoi, Wilbraham, and Pedroza. So it's not all good.

Re. Townsend, he looked like a good signing for us, and most fans were on board.

Benteke, Mandanda, Tomkins, Cabaye, MacArthur, Hennessey, Ledley, Gayle, etc., all signed since Dougie. So he does not have a monopoly on decent signings.

That tells me, despite some really poor ones, we've been heading in the right direction even when we don't always get it spot on.

One of the reasons we keep losing to clubs similar to us.
Every time Ward got the ball Saturday he moved it to his right foot, this in turn slows our movement down.
Kelly did OK ,but all the players must do it week in week out.
Not just the once.
Like Jim Cannon used to do 8/10 every game.

Spot on Alan & because AP does not consider our only other fit left footed left back Fryers good enough to start a game, the balance of the team is not right from the kick off. Therefore, a priority in Jan window.

It's good to see Fryers getting game time, but quite honestly - he's by far not good enough for a regular spot in any PL team. Not at the moment anyway....Yes, please a left back that can go straight into starting 11 and not wait till January is history.

Mortiz wasn't too bad and Dikgacoi was great for us, at least Dougie had a plan for him.

Pardew's been good in getting us Benteke and Cabaye, signings which I couldn't see us getting under Pulis but he doesn't have much of an eye for a bargain, which is kind of where the 25 man squad needs to be built. In my opinion, in many ways Souare has been his best signing because it's the only successful cheap one he's pulled off.

Freedman got us Jedinak, Delaney, Ward, Bolasie, Murray for peanuts. And yet 3 of Pardew's £10M+ replacements still live in their predecessors shadows: Townsend < Bolasie, Tomkins < Delaney, Wickham < Murray.

I think Saturday also showed why AP thought we needed a better defender than Delaney. No faulting commitment, but his control/passing had the team going backwards needlessly at times. There was a moment when we lost momentum in an attack, the ball went back to him on the half way line and we ended up with a throw in on the edge of our own box.

Tomkins will come good I think, just needs a bit of time.

Wickham when fit looks like a better player than Murray to me as well. He's so much more mobile and powerful. The problem is those injuries...
