Read john francomes comments. Seems a strange thing for him to say!

Seemed very respectful and insightful.

The fall 20 years sounds like he was at death's door even back then.

Shergar's Derby victory in 1981.

I was there as usual (when the Derby was run on a Wednesday afternoon). Had a wedge on him at Even's and won a packet.

Won by 10 lengths at a canter, slowing down near the finish.

Swinburn was a talented jockey and was right up there with Piggott, Lewis, Mercer, Eddery, Carson etc in the golden age of flat racing.

RIP Walter.

I don't know about the rest Hoof, but I can't agree about Carson. In my opinion he was as bent as they come, and I witnessed it first hand.

I was at a track up north (I think it was Wolverhampton) in the mid to late eighties, when a bloke in front of me gave the bookie a roll of notes and said '10 grand on ..... (whatever it was Carson was on)'. I placed my bet with the same bookie then watched him have a quiet word with his runner, who then ran straight across the course, right to the other side. He went straight to Carson and had a conversation with him.

Carson was on the favourite and it finished second to last I think. To say fishy is an understatement and I never backed anything he rode from then on. Having said that, they're probably all at it.

RIP Walter.

I have no knowledge of who might have been a bent jockey back then or indeed now, but I do know that Grade 1 and classic races like the Derby are strictly run to form because of the rewards in prize money and stud fees. It's quite hard to 'pull' a horse in a race and avoid the scrutiny of the stewards at Epsom, but might be achievable at Wolverhampton in a selling race?

Wiki shows him to have won 17 classic races and was champion jockey 5 times.

He also won the Derby 4 times... I was on Troy and Henbit.

You know what you saw though and I don't disbelieve you, but my experience of betting on his horses was reasonably profitable in the 70's/80's.
