I think we had (and still have, up to a point) a special group, in terms of spirit, which offered terrific work-rate and work-ethic with it. Incredible spirit can take you very far, if correctly harnessed - see: "Hillsborough Heroes", Leicester last year, 80s/90s f***ing Wimbledon etc. There was always a significant risk this would drop as the squad inevitably ages/evolves and I think we're seeing that. The 'better' players need to be a helluva lot better if they don't have the same spirit. Otherwise it's more a question of ability and tactics. Bugger.

I remember the first few transfer windows we had in the premiership we were looking to buy players that would suit our style, fit into our team spirit and give 100% for the team. Don't really think benteke, townsend and Tompkins meet that criteria...is that where we've gone wrong?

We are 18th in distance covered. The top five are pretty obvious 1. Liverpool it does show that fitness is key in modern football. The 3 best coaches in England all play high tempo high pressing. Dyche and Pulis also get there teams to work very hard to make up for lack of quality. Palace have always looked at their best when we have a high work rate and get at the oppo
The ups and downs of Palace have left me older than my years |

I agree with a lot of the sentiments on here, additionally I wonder if we miss a 'big' midfielder. I'm not saying we shouldn't have sold Jedinak, but his size at set pieces (defending) must have added some peace of mind to the defending unit. So should we have replaced Jedinak better? (to be honest, we couldn't have replaced him with worse, ie, the 'invisible flame' ini) Edited by si_1967 (30 Nov 2016 2.40pm)

But we've become overreliant on McArthur's energy and the fact that the creativity vanishes without Puncheon (Since our return, we have never won a game in the PL where Puncheon has not featured). But you've got to look at players like Leroy Fer at Swansea and Capoue at Watford and wonder if we also need someone like them. I suggest an aggressive pursuit of Dembele of Spurs in January (without of course giving them Zaha as part of the deal). Schneiderlin would be another option.

Personally I think fitness is the key. When you're knackered, concentration goes out the window. If a player runs past you you think 'f**k' and don't pick him up (or struggle to get there). Heads drop and you play to survive. Seems like I see that week in and week out. I bet we've conceded the most goals in the last 5 mins in the league. With the current levels of fitness we have no chance to see a game out - and guess what... we haven't

To answer the Op. "Yes". Fitness does seem to be the problem and affects all aspects of our game. Cannot think straight if you're nackered. Mis-time tackles giving away free kicks. Fail to track runners. Fail to get up and compete for headers. Sustaining injuries. Lack of fitness could contribute to all these.

Additionally, in my view, there seems to be a general "couldn't give a toss" attitude towards supporters this season in all aspects of the club. Edited by Henry of Peckham (30 Nov 2016 6.37pm)

So, does our belief in what lies behind what we are witnessing actually mean anything? Are Parish, Bright & co so deluded that they can't see with their Pardew-tinted spectacles? It's so glaringly obvious! Please someone, somewhere, use this reasonable and logical rationale for the benefit of the team and all of us.
