5 assists and 1 goal in 5 games. He's our best player at the moment and with Townsend looking completely uninterested, we're really going to suffer in Wilf's absence.

I don't know much about their national leagues but is it potentially based around those calendars.

It is a weather issue. Rainy seasons (and not rain but rainy seasons), hot summers in the north make it impractical to host it in June/July unless of course South Africa is the only country to ever host it......

What does irritate me is that's it's every other year. Once every four makes it even more special to win it.

How can you run a professional business when priority is given to such stupid tournaments? The clubs should have the right to deny a player's request to go to such tournaments.

I believe that we have to continue paying him whilst he's away playing for someone else so at the very least Zaha's new national federation should compensate the club for his wage cost whilst he's playing for them

Good luck to him.

Some of the responses on here are very UKIP / Daily Mail.

How dare those Africans do anything that might affect the money making machine that is the Premier League...

We have been in the Premier League long enough now to have built a squad that can cope with this sort of thing.

I agree to a point, here a lot of people think that the world should stop for the EPL and the money proves it. They think it is the best league in the world, proved again by money. It is a good spectacle but a long way off being the top league.

As for the ACN, I do think every other year is too much but as you said, it is nothing new.

What is new is that Wilf has made a decision that nobody at the start of the season had an idea about to how to plan for. It is his choice and I think it is a good one given the treatment by England but at the same time it makes life more difficult for the club next January.

On a positive note - at least we have the opportunity to cover this position in the next transfer window (just about).

Ivory's gain is England's loss.

Perhaps we have more than our fair share of UKIP members and Daily Mail readers?

I'm sure most fans take pride in seeing any Palace players get international recognition, even though it might mean injuries or missing league games.

I would love to have seen Wilf play more games for England, he's too good not to be playing international football. After some of the recent anodyne and lacklustre England performances this year I've been surprised and disappointed that they haven't called him into their squads. I can't blame Wilf for feeling frustrated and changing his allegiance to the country he was born in.

I really don't get why they host this in January. There was a world cup in South Africa during the summer so it can't be a weather issue ? Should be switched to the off season surely.....

I don't know for sure either, but I would have thought that while the climate in South Africa might be temperate enough for a football tournament in the summer months, the same could not be said about the rest of the continent. Qatar is close by and most people feel it would be a mistake to hold the World Cup there in the summer as it would be far too hot for players and fans alike.

I'm disappointed of course that Wilf will be away in January, but pleased for him that he will get a chance to fulfil his international ambitions and experience tournament football. I hope he comes back safe and well, and an even better player for it.

Sorry, but I feel he's let us down by doing this. We're going to need our best players to get out of this mess and I feel there's a case of both 'throwing toys out of his pram' and 'rats leaving the sinking ship' going on.

Absolute nonsense. He wants an international career like every other player and shouldn't be criticised for that, he's wasted 4 years waiting for England and can't give them any more time.

Absolute pathetic from England though in my opinion. They should have secured Moses when he was young and he's now one of the best wing backs in the league, now we've lost Zaha as well. Why? Because somehow Jesse f***ing Lingard is a more appealing option.

Such a shame that one of the most talented - if somewhat erratic - English players is not selected to play for this country. A sad reflection on the selectors. Wish him every success playing for Ivory Coast and hope he returns from his national duty fit and well!

His club need him especially over the next ten weeks which will probably dictate how our overall season will fare. If he does go I hope at least it is with a heavy heart.

If we go down by one point there will be a lot of 'if only Wilf had stayed' 'why did he go?'

Basically, we need him more than ever right now and he should realise that and do the right thing. He always has the World Cup to aim for.
