The bloke was an arsehole.

Bankrupted his country causing misery to all his countrymen, bumped off anyone opposing his view after torturing them.... and as you say Dermot, was prepared to help Russia obliterate the world with nuclear missiles.

Yet the BBC give him a News obituary like he was the messiah.

He's not the Messiah...........

Help me out here:

What part of this makes him out to be a messiah?

You left out the bit about dramatically improved the lot of his people compared to the previous corrupt US-sponsored regime and left his country, for example, with one of the highest proportions of doctors per head of population in the region in an area where infant mortality etc used to be a real issue...

and yes,the missile crisis arose from the US putting missiles into Turkey and was a tit for tat...

...and yes was authoritarian and paranoid and had lots of problems (sounds like Farage for a moment!)....

..and whose economy would be f...ed after 50 years of US embargo and attempts to destabilise?

so,in the circs overall a definite 7 out of 10...(as opposed to D Cameron 3 and T May (so far) 1...

It was a very worrying time for all of us around at the time as we genuinely thought that there was a strong possibility of a nuclear war with us right in the firing line

I was only 1 when it happened but I'm pretty sure I'd have found it very worrying had I been aware of it.

That is the first time I've seen that, I was referring to the 6am news bulletin I heard this morning on the radio.

A brief skim read of that article though says to me they are playing down his brutality and involvement in the missile crisis that very nearly ended our existence.

Cool: I've just realised I didn't even post a link to the obituary anyway!

He also executed 1000s of opponents and imprisoned 1000s more. His human rights record against black Cubans is even worse. My next door neighbour three doors up is a Cuban exile & hasn't seen his brother in 40 years because he is not allowed a visa...

An inspiring revolution nobody thought would last more than a few weeks.

Cuba was mob-controlled its people treated like dirt the women as prostitutes for gangsters.

If it was your country you would want a revolution bit like the UK.

One of the good points about Cuba is the health service a nurse for every citizen - NHS people sent there to learn how a health service should be run.

A holiday there recommended - its just so unique.

Castro gave us hope that an alternative was possible even survived the collapse of the USSR.

Certainly gave the USA a bloody nose.
