in a team that won only two in 19, he was somewhat up against it with a manager who has forgotten how to win and just about has an excuse for every result that excludes him from any blame!

You mean the Dwight Gayle who scored 3 in 16 last season in the league? We got 10m for him. That's about right for a 1 in 4 striker in the prem.

The bit in bold is the key.

By the way we don't have trouble scoring goals now, which we did when Dwight was here. We have trouble not conceding. So, keeping him would have solved precisely nothing.

He was also unfancied by Ollie, Millen, Pulis and Warnock, so that's irrelevant. He was unlucky to be injured during Wickham and Bolasie's spell out as that would of been his chance to grab a place. Shame it would of been good to see if he could of made it work, but it didn't so again it's irrelevant.

Err, no. He played sixteen times across the season (scoring three goals), including half a dozen games when we were playing well (yet he failed to score in any of those). The year before, he played 25 and scored five league goals.

Again, scoring goals this season is not our problem. It's letting them in. So how would keeping Gayle have helped defensively?

If you come to a fork in the road, take it.

I know. But how is that irrelevant? He did not do enough in the PL to justify a regular place under several managers. He didn't work that hard on the pitch, didn't hold it up, and didn't score very often. It's damning that they all often put on Campbell instead of him.

However, I was responding to a point made by another poster which implied we would be better off with him still in the side. I would ask you, if scoring goals is not a problem for us now that Gayle has left, how would he help the team?

Not disagreeing. The point was aimed at Pardew, so I was just saying that was irrelevant as other managers had left him out.

I misunderstood. I was also trying to point out that his record in the team, with a couple of matches excepted, was not that great.

I actually think we have a better team than last season, despite Bolasie's departure, yet AP still can't turn it round. Time to clear your desk Pard's.

The one consistent problem for all of 2016 has been stupid mistakes. It started with Hennessey throwing one in at Villa and the keeping errors continued with AP never giving Speroni a look in. I don't want to open that argument up again but it was AP's pig headedness that created the problem. Since we sorted out the keeper problems we then see our defence making basic errors which didn't happen before. We constantly shoot ourselves in the foot and when it happens as often as this the manager has to take the blame.

City's 2nd goal was joke defending - something which we never saw before - and the reason? - a lack of preparation. We have had a good team for the whole year and it is a disgrace that we should have been named the worst team. I'm not for changing managers often but based on this year's league performances I think AP has to go.
I can see us in the bottom 3 when we start the new year and then SP will have to act - I just hope his previous ability to find a saviour holds up.

Not sure you can have a go at a manager for preferring a keeper, it's a personal choice, but I can't really argue with your post otherwise. Like you, based solely on this season we have to take action.

If we maintain this points per game average over the remainder of the season we''ll finish on 29 points.

It's nothing to do with preference but rather good management and coaching ! WH wasn't AP's original choice but when McCarthy made mistakes he brought WH in but when he had a bad spell he stubbornly stuck with him (apart from trying McCarthy once again with disastrous consequences! ).

I'm not criticising his team selection here but his year long inability to stop the stupid mistakes.

Of the many post questioning Pardews management recently in view of results. It is strange that nobody ever questions Keith Millens role in our performances, I thought he was first team coach. Therefore as coach he has a responsibility in drilling the defence.

Its easy to say get rid of Pardew, but that is not the whole problem, yes we may get a bounce effect if someone new comes in, but how long will that last.

The players are guilty of stupid mistakes, even basic mistakes ie Citys second goal, nobody at the near post, don't tell me Pardew said leave that area empty. Some players have been very poor this season, Townsend big disappointment ( how he get in the England squad is a mystery ), Kelly out of his depth and too slow, Dann not anywhere near his best, Tomkins more expected.

The board will be near a critical call soon, not easy because it is not one man to blame.
