If they're a good coach/ manager then I don't care about their playing history. My view entirely. Maybe 'Boards' think that a popular ex-player will be given greater slack by supporters and that these supporters will be more tolerant if things are not going so well.Perhaps this is one consideration and might tip the balance if it is a close call between candidates on a shortlist. Chelsea won the FA Cup with Gullit in charge and the FA Cup, League Cup, Cup Winners Cup amongst others when Vialli was manager. Edited by Willo (16 Nov 2016 6.35pm)

It's a small time attitude and is the opposite of appointing on merit. We need to move away from it ASAP frankly. The club's DNA for a long time has been about producing local talent, finding a bargain and looking after one of your own. It's romantic to think an ex player can come in and take us forward. No shame in that and until we are at a place where ex players that are now managers are currently not good enough, then why not? If we had say Mancini and broke into top 6 and forged us into a european force, then ofcourse wanting Freedman as boss would look odd, but if Freedman took say Celtic to new european heights and won plaudits, then why not. It's all relative and you have to remember a lot of old boys came back to help us out when we were in admin at various times.
