Sometimes a club like palace has to pay higher wages to get a player to sign, clubs like Dortmund with their great history , great stadium etc can attract players that way!

I agree, but I have to admit that appearing as high as the 20th position came as a surprise to me!

Does anybody know where to find the extended list? I will have a look and try to post the link if I manage to find it, as I'm curious about some other clubs in other leagues.

Incredible...a team of multi-millionaires plying their trade in a 1950's stadium. The Arthur Wait Stand (where I sit) can't even provide modern toilets and civilised food outlets. Priorities have all gone bonkers. I always totally backed our consortium, CPFC2010, but as the seasons go by, I am starting to wonder whether Mr Parish and the board have lost any sense of priorities.

What, like making sure we are a financially viable club?

As for the salaries we are paying less than the average and you have to factor in freebies like Sakho. Also what isn't clear is whether things like bonuses and image rights are factored in.

I don't understand. If Palace's weekly wage bill is £37,000, how can Benteke be earning £100,000+ per week, as it says in the story? Am I missing something? Confused...

That's the average wage.

If you mean Sako, how is he a 'freebie', unless he plays for us for nothing?

I am sure you are being deliberately obtuse. We signed him on a free so pay more in salary than we would normally.

But then you know that

Very very very sound logic when you look at the stats.

The wage bill of a club has been shown to support about 80%+ of a teams league position. A team with the 11th biggest wage bill should absolutely expect to finish in or just around 11th.

Failing to do so with any regularity is evidence of an underperforming team/manager (just as finishing above would be evidence of an overperformance)

At the risk of needing a tin hat after this:

Given that we have no doubt increased our wage bill with each respective year that we have been in the "loads a money" league, & the fact that the new TV money exorbitantly inflated hew TV money is just that - "new" - would it not be a fairer summary to take our average position in those earnings table,s over those years & then see how it compares in relation to our league position - rather than a one year judgement ?

Also - the poster who commented about our position being above Stoke - I would definitely say that it costs a lot more to live In London than it does to live in Stoke & the surrounding areas.

Scary. Our wage bill is now so massive that my season ticket for this season pays for about 55 minutes of Benteke. The club could let everyone in for free and it wouldn't make that big a difference as clubs are now so dependent on the TV money. No wonder we get left with players like Campbell that we can't get rid of - who can blame them for sticking around when they're on such crazy money. One day the bubble will burst.

To be quite frank, they would barely have a shred of currently up to date information to base most of this on.

i.e. it's guesswork.

And the average wage is fairly irrelevant unless it's in the context of wages as a percent of turnover.

Optimistic as ever

To be fair it's completely reasonable logic. Statistics have shown that in the Premier League there is a strong positive correlation between wage bill and league position.

So yes, we should be expecting to finish around 11th. 16th as we currently are, after an easy run is under-performance for sure.
