Many thanks to everyone who has chipped in with so much good advice - we will sit down over the weekend and decide how to respond, using some of the ideas offered. It really is much appreciated!

We don't recognise the amount but then we can't remember the original amount that we cleared at the time. Time to check whatever files we might have laying around that might help. Initially though, I think we must insist on them providing an account history so that we can see what's gone on in the past, leading to this situation.

Wonga have already been subject to an investigation by their regulator as you can see from the link I provided earlier. They were using non-existent debt collecting firms and are still working under a voluntary agreement overseen by the FCA working out compensation for unfair and misleading debt collections. So check out the link and you may be entitled to compensation too.

Log into the Wonga account and look at the history on there. I'm sure there should be some sort of account history on sites like that.

Wonga interest rates are around 300%PA. If they are after £258 now, it could be that there was an outstanding debt (or fee) of only £25.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

As has been said, request a breakdown of the debt and this should shed light on the situation.

The fact the debt is pre-wonga FCA censure leads me to believe it is highly likely the loan was mis-sold, as Wonga were not doing sufficient affordability/creditworthiness assessments at the time (2013), so you may have a claim for some type of refund.

I would not worry too much at this stage. One question I would ask is whether the claim has come direct from Wonga or from a separate debt collector? They may have sold the debt on, which shouldn't make too much difference to you, but that may explain why you have received the claim, as is possible your payment has not been communicated to the debt-buyer.

Again, as has been said, if they fail to resolve the matter, complain. If it still is not resolved to your satisfaction after their final response, contact FOS who will be an impartial adjudicator, but who tend to side with the consumer in my experience!

Who is the debt collector?

I think a lot of them just try it on.

Back in August i filled up with fuel at Tesco and then realised i stupidly didn't have any means of payment. Tesco were fine, filled in a form with all my details, then went back 20 minutes later and paid them. Last week received a letter from a debt collector telling me that i still owed the money which had now been increased by all sorts of fees. A bit suspicious to me that Tesco stated i had a week to pay but i didn't hear anything from debt collectors or any sort of enforcement or reminder for 3 months.

Now i was fine because i kept the receipt, but I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't have kept it that long and wouldn't have any evidence at all that it had been paid. The debt collectors obviously buy the details off tesco and then try it on with people.
