Someone help me out with a Palace Scottish right back please.

I have it in my head that inside forward Johnny McNichol reverted to full back in his latter years, Chris.
I do think he appeared at right back. I stand to be corrected though.
Anyone else remember?

In answer to the O.P.: Jim Cannon. The reasons are self explanatory.

Is this a five minute argument, or the full half hour? [Link]

None springs to mind at the present time but I recall left-backs Tony Taylor and John Loughlan.

I was trying to put together an eleven from Alba, but really struggling for a right back.

Yes he went from 8 inside right to 4 right half and then played both full back roles at 2 & 3.

I know I'm getting into real pernickety detail here, but my memory tells me that McNichol played number 6, with Terry Long at 4. I still have the programmes from those years, but not the energy to locate and get out the relevant storage box. I think you're correct in saying that McNichol then appeared in both full-back positions. Had he played on, would he have gone in goal?!

You're right he did have a spell as left half and wore no.6 Some of it coincided with George Petchey coming in and playing 4 right half. Johnny Mc was clearly very flexible but keeper a step too far. A quiet man but very influential on the pitch.

How about Robert Orr born Hardgate Scotland signed from Morton played 12 games as right back in 1927. Overall played 71 games (mostly at left back) scored 2 goals before retiring in 1928?

I wasn't being entirely serious with that suggestion. But I do vividly recall him flinging himself in goalkeeper style, arms outstretched, across the goal at the Whitehorse end, in a vain attempt to prevent a goal. If he'd stopped the shot, a penalty would obviously have been awarded, but in those days I don't think he would have been sent off. Right or wrong?

That raises the question, if a defender (in the modern era) gets a hand to a goal-bound shot but fails to stop the ball going into the net, does he get red-carded? After all, he hasn't - despite his efforts - denied the opposition a scoring opportunity.
