If you're playing 3 at the back, one of them has to have a bit of pace.

Wilf? Defend? I wish he would!

I tell you, I am seriously worried on that score.

It's a modern game and I think he needs to realise that he cannot afford to switch off defensively the way he has been doing.

He ball-watched and lost his attacker for the first goal on Saturday and I even saw him half turn his back on the shot for Leicester's third strike.

I remember Gabbidon turning his back on a shot - it is never good.

Lackadaisical is indeed the word.

I want to see Zaha acting in a far more mature and professional way.

Stop whinging, look sharp on and off the ball and be a man.

You're not a starlet anymore.

(dons helmet).

We simply haven't got the personnel.

Wing backs need to be superfit and quick.
Rarely a standard right/left back/midfielder can adapt as a wing back.

The right and left centre backs need pace to widen and cover the wing backs when pushing forward. Ours have no pace whatsoever.
Chelsea have Dave and Cahill, with Luis sweeping.
All have pace!

I disagree. I do think we COULD have the personnel.
If we played 2 of Dann/Tomk and DD and used say a faster Ward as the 3rd defender that could work.

Similarly, many rave about Zaha's improved defensive work so I do think he could fill the wing back role given time (he's a better natural fit than Moses).

So it's really on the left side that is a question mark. Chelsea play essentially a left back in that role so we could do similar.

It would be a complete change of style, at the moment our biggest threat is on the wings, little comes through the middle. Take that threat away and we have nothing.

I'm sure he reads these boards avidly, and at this moment is probably p*****g himself laughing.

Unfortunately we need both the right and left centre back to be quick, so yes Wardy fits this mould but neither Dann, DD or Tomkins do.

Souare would make a seriously good wing back, but Wilf or Andros would not.

i think wilf has more natural wing back potential than Moses at Chelsea and look how well he is doing.

This formation 3-4-3 doesn't impact our winf threat as we still play with 2 wingers working around Benteke.

As for no pace in the back 3 , well the wing backs are there to supplement the defence so can only see it as a possitive. If we have no pace in a 4 man defence can't see how it can be worse if we defend with 5

You can't play 3-4-3 with 2 wingers unless you ask the wingers to play ad wing back, or you ask the wingers to play narrower behind with Benteke. Both wilf and Townsend are out and out wingers, they won't play narrower and won't play as wingbacks.
