I still take my kids to Brockham each year and it is huge with an enormous bonfire - two great pubs on the green and the best fireworks I've seen, although I think Lewes is supposed to be pretty good too. There's a bonfire bus to Brockham from Redhill station if you don't want to drive - but there's loads of parking. been going for the last 15 years or so, wouldn't go anywhere else. fantastic display every year

They always used to have a bonfire at the Streatham common display as well. Don't know of anywhere that has a bonfire at their display anymore. There's a huge one on top of the hill in Caterham, or Brockham as someone else mentioned. Then you have Lewes and all those other bonfire societies, that take it far too seriously if you ask me.

We used to make a guy, loads of fun and equally a good earner. Lucky someone was around with a camera who knew what they were doing. No-one has ever taken my picture when I buy the Big Issue.

We used to do PFTG outside what was safeways by Norwood Junction, would set up during the day then come back during rush hour and like others pointed out it was a nice little earner until the w***er with the paper mashe guy turned up and stole trade. IIRC it all really stopped around 96 (well for me) because it was outlawed as a form of begging. As for firework displays we used to go to the one at Norwood Rec but that stopped years ago, I have also heard Brockham is good down here though we have displays in Selsey 3 times in a year (in June for lifeboat day end of August for carnival and mid October as main display) and when back at home there's a half decent display at Fontwell race course, and on festival of speed and revival days you get a very loud but good looking display from Goodwood.

It seems that Hallowe'en has replaced Bonfire night in popularity. I haven't seen a 'Penny for the Guy' for probably 20 years. Would probably be a 'Quid for the I can remember my brother losing a pair of his scruffy work jeans from the washing line in early November and guessing lads had pinched them to clothe their Guy.

I haven't seen one either for years - probably in the same historical bin as bob a job week.
