Exactly. This isn't Sunday League, so you can't slide backwards through the team as you lose your ability to play up front.

Rumour has it he's not bad between the sticks, or was when he was younger.

Had to Google your last post. I couldn't link a Chinese province to Palace.

TV personality Ronald Summerland, from the crowd shot at 25.32 of match of the day, has tweeted his support for s**ting in a bucket.

Then again, she does look a bit like a bloke and is the person in the family with the charm.

2-0 vs Malta, doesn't bode well, given it was premier league stars vs 14 people who are free in the close tourist season.

I get that they effectively spent 90 minutes on damage limitation - what I don't get is why you'd put out a team that plays into that, just to get the safe win.

Lure them out, play six up front or something crazy to create space. Make a game of it. I actually felt like time was going backwards watching the game.

Its not like Southgate would get sacked either. We can't even find a manager, let alone someone who wants to be their assistant.

Agree with all of that. I've said before how crap Joe Hart is with his feet but I was wishing we would knock it around our own box at 2-0 up, until a few of them got bored enough to try and move up towards our goal.

I switched onto Red Dwarf at around half time. Not a great episode but better than the England game.

I'd like us to play without a keeper so there's a real element of anything could happen.

Long overdue. Should have taken the graceful exit after the Euro's.

Terrible against Malta, just slowed the play up or gave away the ball anytime he had possession. Hasn't had a decent game for England in years.

Shame- never achieved the incredible potential he had as a young player.

Time to give him the boot, concentrate on the next generation.

Didn't do bad in the FA cup final playing there did he?

Players change position/roles as they get older all the time.

He had that one good run and dug out an excellent cross. The rest of the time, for ManUre and England, he's been ineffective in midfield. As was said above, he slows down distribution, makes poor passing decisions and executes them poorly very often. Also, he completely destroys the team shape, dropping behind the centre halves in some cases to collect the ball, meaning that he doesn't have anyone to pass to because the outlet is supposed to be him.

We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football.

Not true - he was the best player on the park at Wembley by a distance, and has been numerous other times playing in midfield.

His pass completion has been in the high 80s over the past couple of seasons, so the idea that his distribution is poor doesn't really hold up.

8 goals and 6 assists in 27 PL games last year, most of which came from midfield in a massively underperforming United side - hardly a bad return is it?

why has both Jose and Southgate (didn't think he had it in him tbh) dropped him then?
