Thanks for that input PalacePhotoMan.

Having played in the last game of the 56/57 season for Torquay (his 89th game for them), it seems he went to Watford (a second spell with them) for the start of the 57/58 season and played 17 games for them before transferring to Palace. His first game for Palace was home to Brighton in our 18th game of the season. Some of this is from Wikipedia but it does seem to hang together.

What is the status of that photo? Could I use it for an article about Collins?

Do you have any photos of him playing for Palace?

Sadly I don't have any photos of Tony playing for Palace, nor any team photos with him in, nor any individual portraits or anything - we were very badly covered in those days.

That Palace v Torquay photo is an original press photo stamped & labelled by Reuters. They would own the copyright and if you wanted to use it in a publication you should get their clearance and I guess pay them for the privilege.

Having said all that, in the 2014/5 season in every home programme Palace used some of my photos in an article and as far as I know didn't once clear it with the press agency.

Best of luck with that, but if you decide to go ahead and want to use this photo, then please contact me and I will happily re-scan it for you to a high dpi.

This photo was from his time at Bristol City.

Thanks for that Penge Eagle, it was through your article that I first heard of him as he was a few years before my time.

The book isn't published until next week but I'll definitely get a copy.

I have a black and white photo of Tony in an action shot wearing his Palace kit at Selhurst Park which I'll gladly share with you.

It's one from my childhood collection so poor quality I'm afraid but it means a lot to me.

Article in Telegraph about Tony Collins promoting his daughter's book about him.

I saw Collins play. He was a tricky left winger and a great character. Sometimes after comprehensively beating the full back he would do a form of leg shuffle playing to the crowd who loved him. I was disappointed he was only with us for a couple of seasons.

I have to say I never knew of Tony Collins - before my time.

We did have a youngster on our books in the 1960s called Chick Maynard. I don't think he ever made a first team appearance so consequently never saw him play. However, I saw a photo of him recently and it urns out he was black.

Not the first but who remembers and what happened to Mark Lindsay who was a local boy and a junior before signing for 4 seasons before going to Tampa Bay?

I saw him score his one and only goal for us against Watford at Vicarage Road in a 1-1 draw in the League Cup.

My Dad remembers Tony Collins & saw him score our only goal in a 1-0 win at Ashford Town back in '58 in an FA Cup 1st round tie. He recalls us being under pressure for long periods during that game, but held on to go into round 2. Oh for a clean sheet now!

A stockbroker urged me to buy a stock that would triple its value every year. I told him, at my age, I don't even buy green bananas!
