I'm not going to argue with the notion that Benteke is the best header of the ball we've had. I certainly can't think of others. Bright was up there, but think Benteke is better. But actually Jagielka did well on Friday night. He won 11 of 13 aerial contests, compared to Benteke 9 from 19. First time this season that a defender has won more against Benteke than he has against them. And that's despite the fact we obviously targeted him as easier to beat in the air than Williams. Edited by OknotOK (05 Oct 2016 12.10pm) You're not going to argue? Then you are in the minority on this site... Interesting stats - I guess it doesn't take into account the quality of the ball and whether its a genuine 50/50 but still, I'm surprised he lost out that many times, seemed like he won every one he went up for!

Probably Benteke or Scott Dann for Palace, old enough to have seen Tommy Lawton who I reckon is the best I have seen.

Paul Stewart - during his loan spell when he single-handedly got us promoted. He just won every header from our keeper. He was absolute class. Mickey Droy won a fair few - not surprising as he was about 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide.

Well I think Simon's head is large; always involved in espionage. (Name that tune) |

Ian Evans, Steve Wicks and Jim Cannon were really excellent headers of the ball when i was a lad. Mickey Droy too. But then he would be. Then Brighty, of course. I think we are wetting our pants with excitement a bit too early with Benteke in comparison to the above but a few more games like last Friday then it will be more than justified. The damp boxers, I mean.

Used to launch off the back of a defender and linger in the air for what seemed like forever. Chris Armstrong had a similar technique and wasn't too bad with his noggin either. Was good with a diving header. I love a diving header, don't see them much now days do you.

Didn't rate him particlularly with his feet but always thought that Darren Ward (the Peckham Beckham) was very good in the air, defensively anyway, seemed to win everything. Benteke, if carries on like he has started, has to be up there with Bright and Ninja, started going to games in the early 80's and saw plenty of games with Jim Cannon in but was probably too young to appreciate or recall his heading prowess but understand he was quality with his head too. Scott Dann can't be far off either. Edited by cpfc1976 (05 Oct 2016 1.49pm)

Terrific in the air. We've edtablished that. But tactically we haven't yet sussed that he's no slouch on the ground - great touch with chest or foot, holding the ball up, nimble feet, good distribution. And not forgetting the scoring goals thing. When THAT all comes in stream, wow! GET working on it, Pards!
