The same has been said of John Stones and David Luiz.

It must be some 10 years ago that O'Neill commented that Cahill has a lot of talent but makes elementary mistakes. But he has improved since then with experience.

A fair point though I think the two you refer to are slightly different in that I think both are in some ways too talented for their own good and try to complicate things when they would be better off just hoofing it clear at times. Luiz is an odd one. He clearly has plenty of talent but his performances can sometimes be shockingly bad. For example in the World Cup against Germany which must be one of the worst defensive performances of all time (though the left back ran him close)

Very baffling signing in that he is not a Conte type defender when you consider some of the types of defenders he had at Juventus. Was signed very late in the 'Window' - perhaps he tried others and wasn't successful, he really needed to get someone in and decided to sign Luiz at the last minute. Sold by Chelsea for £50 Mill and re-signed for £34 Mill ! He certainly needs to bolster his defensive ranks in January.

Interesting that a couple of people think that he wouldnt get in our team....i'd disagree and see him as a better defender to both Tomkins and Damo and has greater experience than Dann.

Surely competition in that department is exactly what we'd be after, however i'd agree that coming from Chelsea he may want some sort of guarantee with regards to game time.

Cahill is a truly awful defender and is no way better than Dann, Tompkins or Delaney. If Zuma were fit he would be playing in his position. Conte will have him out of the door as soon as he is able.

He's certainly struggling with form at present but to suggest he's truly awful and not as good as Damo and Tomkins, is stretching things..... a fair bit

Why don't we approach every SUPPOSED supreme Prem player who is clearly not fit for playing in The Premiership? As I write this, I bow my head unattempted forgiveness for previously assuming that Bony and / or Zaza would be TOP buys in recent transfer market...and how they come to show themselves of late as bereft of form.

Cahill simply needs to work DAMN hard at rediscovering former top form and then reigniting his status within First X!

Or even First XI

The only reason I mention him is that he's a proven CB of quality (Form is temporary) and would be a step up from what we have. If he was playing well currently I wouldn't even be suggesting him as Chelsea wouldn't consider letting him go (which is the report on which I based this thread)....we're not currently in the position that we can start poaching players from top sides because we want to...we're still in a position where we need to feed off of the scraps from the top teams table.

He is not the player he was three years ago, and currently is nowhere near as good as Dann or Tomkins. He would be a bench warmer for us

He looks lost if he's not got John Terry telling him what to do. Not the brightest!

I'd prefer a CB with a bit more pace if we decide to buy another one.

Totally agree. He'd have been nowhere near the England squad if he wasn't playing at Chelski. You want leadership from your centre halves and Cahill doesn't show any in my opinion. In case anyone's in any doubt, that's a "NO" from me.

Before you criticise someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticise them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

We all know that if you play for one of the top 6 then you get in regardless of ability and form - Cahill fits that type 100%.
My Chelsea mates reckon he is a liability.
