At Selhurst he always used to remember the name of the Police officer who used to accompany the referee on to and off the pitch. He was a lovely chap called "Alec".They used to bump into each other in the corridor outside the dressing rooms.

There's a few things out-dated in his quotes (women's football for instance) but it's amazing how ahead of his time he was with most of them. The 'tactics don't lose games players do' and 'if a manager is replaced by a Chairman that hired him, the Chairman should go to' seem very pertinent to Palace recently. I agree with him on both in principle but there's a valid flip-side in that our Chairman has identified on about 4 separate occasions when a new Manager has been needed and it's worked every time. I certainly wouldn't want Parish to walk but there are lots of other teams where I think the Chairman has been disgusting and showed a complete lack of respect and football knowledge - Roman Abramovich in particular. Again, regards to tactics I agree that some idiots on Match of the Day think they're Fergie, when they've either never managed or have a shocking record and don't know anything about tactics but when you look at the performances of Townsend, Benteke and Puncheon since Sam took over you can't say it's all players. Interesting he can spark a debate on today's football even when dead. Legend.

I recall the Clough quote : “The River Trent is lovely, I know because I have walked on it for 18 years” – He used to buy the partners/wives of his players presents thinking that if you keep them happy, the players are happy.A legend.

Clough had much more personality, and has a brilliant novel written about him (Not a bad movie either).
