I don't buy psycobabble rubbish either, but full blown alcoholism as opposed to 'liking a drink' or being a heavy drinker is an illness which I believe from my personal experiences sits firmly on the mental health spectrum. If left untreated it can and will kill you. Even with the intervention of treatment it can still kill. A Bit like saying to someone with cancer if you fight hard enough and have enough treatment you will get better. Well that's true in some cases for others the illness is simply too aggressive , too advanced and it will eventually take their life.

Believe me its taken me a bloody long time to get to.the point in my life where I can sit here and say that confidently.

Just read the autobiography of Eric Clapton, guess that's how it is. He says (or said in 2007) that he'd been dry for 20 years. But he knew a lot of people who had lost the fight.

Sounds like the man is doing well and I hope it continues and he finally puts it all behind him.

I was never fortunate to watch him play as I am too young but amongst the praise it really rankles me that we (cpfc) are the club that is helping him and sticking by him during thick and thin only to have it thrown back in our faces by him keep pouring his love to get back and do something for arsenal.

As far as I understand they washed there hands with him but have left the door open to a return upon his continued sobriety.

I dunno what it is I hope he continues and re finds the work in punditry but to jump to them after all our help just tastes sour.

Let's just be pleased that he is having a good spell and let's hope it continues.
He was a great player for both Clubs so why should he not want to work at both?
Good luck to him - I remember his England debut - always a proud day when a Palace man pulled on an England shirt.
I wish him nothing but the best wherever he goes and whatever he does!

Probably a couple of months ago he did a "Night with Kenny Sansom" at Lingfield FC where he regaled stories of his football experiences.I am told he wasn't in a state of inebriation at all and he was well received.Well done Kenny !

He was the best and remains the best full back I have ever seen. I remember when he broke into the team as a very young teenager; absolute class. We hope the great man is able to get real help for the problem so he is remembered for all the right reasons. Kenny, thank you for making the team of the eighties such a great team.
I remember my dad doing a caption for a programme picture with Sansom tacking Peter Taylor of Tottenham, previously Palace, of course.
It read: Sansom Spurs on Taylor! It won us two free tickets to the next game! Sadly my father is no longer with us but my memories remain of two happy fans watching how a full back should perform.

Yes I remember watching him when he came into the first team and you could see that he was a special player. Oh for another of his quality.

Kenny just oozed class on the pitch. Can't recall him ever putting a foot wrong and without doubt the best full back I've seen, in fact one of the most comfortable players with a football I've ever seen.

Before you criticise someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticise them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Sad to see some of the heartless comments on here. I remember watching this lightning bolt of a LB streaking down the left wing match after match - with the biggest smile - etched in my memory.

God bless you Kenny. I'm praying for you.

Hope you realise that praying only makes you feel better.

Kenny's issues with drinking are way more serious than making you feel good about yourself.

My daughter goes to university at Wembley Stadium and Kenny was there a few week ago. He said he was two months dry. I guess this must be a major success for him. Good luck to him.

Any kind of pressure can send an Alcoholic back to a bad place. The help should start by not standing by and letting someone guzzle down those pints etc. in the first place.......
