Totally different to today's away experience. As a 16 year old I really enjoyed entering the enemy territory. Scarves hidden, don't give your south London accent away, keep close to a copper! Really was tribal. Don't recall getting onto Coach 1, seemed to be a closed shop of regulars, vaguely recall Denny Warren being the hard man.

Might have been in the 80s but I remember feeling unwell with cold, sore throat etc and getting on a coach to go to Shrewsbury.Got around the Birmingham area and it started to snow haevily to the extent we were informed that the game had been postponed ! There was talk of going to see a game at Coventry but couldn't do so because of insurance reasons. One of the blokes on our coach was Big 'Dave Illingworth'.He was a rather rotund chap with big bushy sideburns and was well known by supporters. Does anyone have any news of the chap who was known as "Illy" ?

Used to get on Neil Everitts coach in the late 70's as a young teenager. Every away game you came back with a tale. Usually about the trouble inside a ground and outside. All worth it though as some very special memories as clear as day from back then reside in me bonce still. Maine Road was the hairiest 'adventure'

Dave Illingworth still goes to all the home games (season ticket), and some aways - sometimes by coach. Often seen at home games with Robbie tobin.

Remember the coach being stopped in traffic outside Ninian Park & Cardiff yobs opening the emergency exit and trying to pull out whoever was in the back row. Had to travel back to Selhurst with the alarm going off.

My first away game was Leicester (I think about 1972) we lost 1-0. It all kicked off outside, I remember Palace being chased by hordes of Leicester, Denny just turned around and gave the lead Leicester fan a right thumping.

Sad to report that Neil informed me that Gerry Mansfield passed away several weeks ago from a heart attack. Like a lot of others on this topic I too traveled on the Supporters' Club coach as it was in those days. I remember approaching Halifax where for the first time the phrase "dark satanic mills" actually meant something, also getting to Tranmere to see a blackboard propped up against a closed turnstile saying "Match Off - Waterlogged pitch" and Gerry like the rest was amazed that no one could have told us before. But whatever the trip Gerry was invariably there with the hand drawn eagle on a folded circular board to be defiantly stuck between the back of the seat and the back window.
