i do want us to sign another recognised striker, but would it be the end of tho of the world if we didnt rush it, took a punt on a kid and look again in janury if it didnt work out. We can't wait to Jan with one recognised striker, I agree campbell is no good, however we had at least 6 weeks to identify striker targets. we have identified targets, abd bid for them in batsuiyi benteke berahino...ok maybe we were punching above our weight bidding for those 3 players but at least we tried for them. every friggin club in the league is after this golden goose of a striker, its the hardest position to sort out.

If a Championship side can sign top forwards then so should Pardew be able to. Staring the season with just Wickham and Campbell is inexcusable in my opinion.

It happens every window, even if we bought in a benteke, how match fit would he be? It's not like the championship, where we have to wait, because we had a small transfer budget.

On the matter of the original question a proportion is an incredibly difficult one to answer I think because of the potential range of factors involved. But out of interest I took a look at some wage figures for Real Madrid and in particular those of Ronaldo. For the figures I got ( no guarantee these are accurate but assuming they are) he earns around 18 mill a year in salary. Sounds a lot but RM's global earnings were around 600 plus million. So Ronaldo costs about 3% of earnings. Of course he probably also generates a significant amount of those earnings on his own.

The clubs earnings, of course, vary with the final position we finish in the league. whilst it is impossible to attribute any league position to a single player if we had a striker who, say, scored 20 goals a season and we finished seventh or eighth we would generate an additional 1.25m per place over last year. In this example that could be as much as ten million more in income which would go a long, long way to covering the cost of the expensive striker. Then you have the asset value until the player is sold and one never knows whether that will be more or less than we purchased said player for. Of course the higher up the league we get more television income is possible, the possibilities of Europe open up and we are a better bet in cup competitions - all revenue generating. I am far from an expert but I would imagine SP has all of the above and more besides factored in to every possible transfer. Using Benteke on 130,000 a week as an example he would also replace someone who has left the club - let us say that someone is either Chamakh or Adebayor who were both earning sixty five thousand a week. Therefore, in reality, we should only do calculations on the 'extra' amount the player costs us over and above who he replaces and not his full salary. If he replaces both of the aforementioned then he is actually not costing us any extra in salary terms!

The concern for me is that the first batch of Premiership league matches are winnable but without the potent strike force that the club has for too long been without, our chances are radically reduced. Why the transfer window doesn't close as the season starts is beyond me. On a second point, CPFC should be interpreted by any professional player as a quality side to play for: great team ethic; intimidating ground for other teams to visit given weight of fans' support; strong youth academy etc. I can only assume that there are players out there wanting the highest price and not particularly bothered about regular first time play or 'pulling on the Palace shirt' with heart and conviction...in which case such players need to be given a wide berth. If the likes of Berahino and Benteke can't recognise the value of playing for Palace then they are welcome to go elsewhere.

We will sign a striker and probably pick up another one on loan.

Add to that our PL performance in 2016 (no one cares about who came second in the FA cup) and years of woeful underinvestment in the ground and training facilities and I can understand why any player with options might be tempted to give us a miss.

Matt Ritchie was on the radio the other day who has also signed for Newcastle from an EPL club. He said that the draw of playing in front of large crowds for a club with a long history was too good to turn down. Suspect the targets that we are looking at have a number of suitors and will need persuading to come to us, clubs like Newcastle seemingly don't have this problem.
