Creative Midfielder needed (suggestion)

I agree with the thesis in this suggestion.
Sigurdsson is similar to Erikssen of Spurs and would add much to our creativity and our goals tally.

Mata still has plenty of football left in him and I'd rather use the Benteke 'money' (if such a pot actually exists) on his type plus a cheaper striker from the lower leagues.
With such superior service Gayle would have come good and I expect him to be central in Newcastle's return to the PL.

To my mind the cost of Benteke is an 'all eggs in one basket' gamble much the same as the short-sighted Adebayor experiment.
I really hope that this is just a smokescreen covering the eventual purchase of a decent midfielder - but I fear not such is Pardew's sterile attitude to attractive and effective football.

You are completely off your trolley if you're comparing the Adebayor and Benteke deals. Benteke is the closest thing you'll get to a sure thing in terms of premier league goals. 25 years old, has scored regularly for 4 seasons, 3 of those for a team very similar to us.

Agree we also need a creative midfielder, but if we have the chance for Benteke we should grab it.

And please dont think Shelvey is a good option. He is a liability, has no mobility, terrible defensively and doesnt score enough. He's like Huddlestone in that occasionally he'll ping an outrageous pass or hit a cracking shot.

Benteke comes with no guarantee and not sure Villa can be called a 'similar team to us' 30 million (if true) is an almighty gamble. Typical of Palace to sell on one of our best strikers without a replacement (or two) lined up. As for Shelvey, yes he is a 'problem' player, possibly a disruptive one, but he can pass the ball better than anything we currently have.

No signing is ever guaranteed success regardless of fee etc but you are right, its a lot of money for a team like us to be paying which is exactly why the board are exercising caution before upping it by another 5 million. I still say at £10 million, Gayle had to go regardless of what we had lined up - it was early in the transfer window and that's a lot of money for a player that was never going to reach his potential with us - plus he was probably begging for the move once he heard about its possibility. Fair play to him that he didn't come out and demand a move, kept it professional and got a deal that I believe suits everyone.

Not sure I agree re Shelvey - don't think what you get as a player is worth the additional baggage. Plus he's ugly as f*ck.

The problem with the "all the eggs in one basket" player is what happens if he breaks his leg. We were in exactly the same position a couple of decades ago when we signed Lombardo who transformed the side until he broke his leg and we slid down the table and were relegated

Ah Lombardo ! Our own 'bald eagle'. Surely, somewhere in the world is someone with half his talent (a budding Fabrigas) plying their trade who we could 'discover' ?
Our last attempt at this, Campana, didn't cut the mustard although he didn't get an extended run to prove how good he was.

is no problem if allied to a masterful footballing brain. Wasn't Bobby Moore the epitome of this?

Problem with Shelvey is he starts well at every club and then seems to disappear once his attitude has time to settle...
