That church has been sitting and waiting on that plot development for decades. It could and should have been developed on multiple times but that proposal is ridiculously out of place.

Tesco didn't ruin Purley, knocking down one house and building a side road with 5 houses/20 flats in it's place has.

Purley was genteel and all independent shoppy and really nice pubby in 1984/85. Great cinema and swimming pool too. And then Tesco turned up roadworks and all. After that it was sh1te in comparison.

Couldn't agree more. A complete dive now although plenty of young commuters want to live but I reckon not go out in Purley.

Maybe the traffic clears by the time you might want to go for a meal at Speroni's or next door, or the big Tapas next to the old Sainsbury's car park exit on the high St (not the Brighton Rd, the 1 way street that runs from the old Railway Tavern down to the old Sainsbury's).

Bit of nostalgia there. Remember the 1st Sainsbury's, where the crossroads is, diagonally left if you come out of Barclays Bank?

That's the site for this proposed tower.

Tesco replaced the water works and the road development while annoying at the time has actually proved to be pretty effective, even with 20 odd years of increasing road use density.

The closure of the cinema was due to the Purley way complex and the pool is still there.

Where do you mean?

I think Tesco has ruined Purley. It is now a junction, a slow dual carriageway, somewhere you pass through, don't want to stop, can't stop and air polluted. The traffic there is quite incredible compared to the '80s.

Every 5th plot on the Brighton road between Purley and Coulsdon.

Purley was always a junction, its called Purley cross. It would be unimaginable now were it to be be how it was, and it wasn't great for traffic even back then.

The church should have developed that plot then, it might have stayed more that way for a while. It has still got the same number of independent shops and pubs, in the same locations.

Purely is ripe for a make over. Few more restaurants on par with Speroni's, Mekan and the tapas are needed. See Reigate, Horsham and Beckenham as a blueprint.

I agree with Brentmeister.

Purley town centre is crap, just a place you go 'through' Last time I looked there were mostly charity shops so they'd hardly be missed. The only thing going for it is a nice commuter spot so why not?

Why do they want to save that awful leisure centre as well? it's like going back in time to my primary school trip to the baths on the smelly coach! Knock the whole place down and build lots of new housing and modern shopping and leisure facilites

FFS don't listen the old NYMBY whingers - these people have probably got a nice semi somewhere and don't give a flying fig about anyone else

I do not disagree with developing Purley, quite the opposite, transformed into somewhere a bit more aspirational, modernised and with more affordable housing.

That doesn't mean I agree with putting a whacking great tower block right in the centre of town. Why does that make me a NIMBY for wanting to protect the look of my town?

People originally moved to Purley for many reasons, but it was originally built for city workers to have somewhere to come and enjoy their gardens, away from the hustle + bustle of city living. Why should that ethos be totally demolished in preference of big businesses making more money out of locals.

Tesco already ripped a massive part of its soul away, stifling the smaller businesses. Sainsburys SHOULD have sold that site decades ago to M&S as was suggested, but they wouldn't as they sold food, but that didn't stop Tesco taking over the area. The 2nd Sainsburys site then went into decline, they stopped cleaning in there and now look at it..

The Leisure centre should all be knocked down and rebuilt, taking housing into consideration, but not a 17 storey building FFS!

This giant development would just be the start of more and more of these things being built, creating giant eye-sores wherever they are put up.

If Purley is just a place you go through, consider how much longer it will take you to get through for the next 5 years with that going up right in the centre. But for us residents, we still do go to the bakery and local shops, so a bit of respect for my local area does not make me a NIMBY.

What Purley needs is a massive flyover from the Brighton Road to the bottom of the Purley Way straight thru' the bible bashers at the Baptist Church.

What it needed was the original plan for the M23 to go all the way to Streatham.

Now I'd just settle for a slip road that went south at the end of it, rather than everyone being forced on the A23 north only for loads of people to have to queue up to do a u-turn.
