Whilst I wasn't a fan of the specific ad mentioned in the article, this reaction is farcical. It's not like we don't have an underlying health issue with obesity or anything.

Would.

Again though I would ask, why do we even have a mayor of London. Utterly facile appointment, given we have mayors in all the London Towns and Local Council and MPs.

My suspicion is something to do with Dick Wittington.

And a Lord Mayor of London to boot.

Hmmm. So Muslim left wing mayor has a problem with poster of women in Bikini.

Well it wasn't going to be long before Muslim attitudes started to pervade our society and the left wing love to pander to totally unrepresentative minorities don't they.

The only people who would be offended by such an ad are those on the extreme edges of society, like bonkers militant feminists, jealous bitter fatties and religious loons.

You voted for it. Well done.

"Nobody should feel pressurised, while they travel on the Tube or bus, into unrealistic expectations surrounding their bodies and I want to send a clear message to the advertising industry about this."

So presumably they're going to be consistent and not allow adverts for plastic surgery, teeth whitening, hair removal, hair replacement etc.

After all no one realistically expects a bald man to start regrowing hair.

Wow, that's the concise list of people I strive to offend in life. If only I knew I could do it just with a picture of a lass in a bikini.

Good. Hopefully they will ban muscular men with nice suits from the train too then as that is an image I can never achieve.

Keep the tube for munters. When do we want it? Now.

Aftershave companies must be s***ting themselves... luckily they have something to help mask the smell.

Good point.

Further more. Even if the ads are cynical and unrealistic, surely it is role models that often encourage us to better ourselves.
Hollywood has been putting out unrealistic images for decades and yet they inspire some in positive ways albeit others less so.
Given that we have fat unhealthy people everywhere I would have thought that images of perfect bodies would do far more good than harm. Unless we want everyone to think that being obese is normal and acceptable.
There will always be those who become anorexic or bulimic with or with out posters, because that is generally a control issue rather than purely about appearance.
My guess is that it is more about politics than about health.

I think we could veer towards molly coddling fatties so much that they no longer get the message that they ought to sort themselves out for the good of their health.

I might get shot down in flames for this (especially as I have never had a weight problem) but I think there ought to be a big poster saying "Oi fatty, see your GP".

That's all vanity driven and for people with more money than sense.

We all hope our kids grow up to have enough self-esteem not to be bothered or influenced too much by 'the perfects' out there but when ads pound them with the not so subtle hidden message of 'this is how you should look', well, if it didn't make an impression on more than just a few they wouldn't advertise their product that way. All about the £££s not others emotional well-being. A bit like drug-pushers.

This. I wonder what the locals would say if a Christian moderate who supported westernization became mayor of abd el Salam in Egypt. I have a feeling they wouldn't be so tolerant. Although, he'd never be voted in- those people know that cultural separation is NOT a bad thing, and multiculturalism is NOT the way forward.
