I've heard them talking about this on TalkSh1te this evening. Some idiot on there thought it was akin to a player going to the byline or taking a corner, crossing the ball back across the penalty area and then being deemed offside for being in front of the ball. Well, he can obviously only be offide if the ball is then played back towards him; in neither case is he blocking the view of the goalkeeper from incoming attack play. If I hadn't been driving I'd have phoned up and told him it was bollocks.

What disgusted me more about this was that Man U enquired quietly of the ref about whether it would be OK for them to shoot at goal with three men in an offside position interfering with the goalkeeper, but apparently nobody thought to advise the Shrewsbury defence that the laws of Association football were being suspended temporarily. So IMHO the goalkeeper and defenders were perfectly entitled to treat those players as if they were offside and expect a free kick if they interfered with play.

Surely if the ref is asked a question like that the only appropriate answer is to quote the offside law verbatim and then tell the captain that this law will, as usual, be applied.

Yes, it's where they got the idea from but I don't really care about the Danish league.

They need to tell the refs here that it's not allowed. Block the view from an onside position, fair enough, but not that.

You can only be adjudged to be offside once the kick is taken. I think that's how it works, is that you block site for as long as possible and then move.

The best thing about the game was how much LVG was making of Man Utd beating Shrewsbury Town. How the mighty have fallen

That is blindingly obvious, what made you think anyone thought otherwise?

No idea, I think I was half conscious when I wrote that nonsense. I love the fact that Man Utd have to stoop to such tactics to beat a team that is several leagues below them, struggling for a league win and scrapping to avoid relegation.

They seemed so proud of their win as well.

Reminds me of when I played as a kid and was so proud of knowing the offside rule, that I'd tell the opposition "you're offside, you know?" Which the manager wasn't happy about.

Good point though that they basically have to cheat to beat a bottom half league 1 side.

Well, for a start, they were all in an offside position when the ball was kicked and as for the interfering with play question, of course they were interfering with play – they made no attempt to win the ball, so what was point of them standing there otherwise? I’m no expert, but isn’t deliberately blocking the keeper’s line of sight considered interfering with play? This practice of the attacking side positioning players behind the defensive wall should be stamped out before everyone’s trying it on.

Of course they were in an Offside position but just because one is in this position doesn't necessarily mean one is "Offside". All down to interpretation of "Interfering with play" and "Interfering with opponent"

The ball actually went over the defending wall and in.
If it had gone over the Man Utd players and in maybe the referee would have deemed it "Interfering with play"/ "Interfering with opponent". Just looking it at it from various angles. unquote

Sorry I can't see any reason not to give it offside. Why were three of them standing there and then running - it was obviously intentional. As well as offside it could also be deemed ungentlemanly play !
Whatever - the goal should never have stood!

All to do with intrepretation regards "Interfering with play" but this is incident is certainly a talking point and I have found it fascinating.I'll will have a chat about this with a referee to see his take on it!!!!

What was Brian Clough's comment...." I pay players to interfere with playn and if they're not, I want to know why"

I'm interested to see if PGMOL reviews this play. It puts added stress on the liners as this set up is outside the vision of the RAs until the ball is struck. It certainly looked off on TV as the three man Man U "wall" was in the keeper's line of sight and remained so. Perhaps a modification of the law is needed for this situation that defines a proper set up on free kicks.

Errm, because it's a violation of the laws of football?
