Come on how can you say Defoe is not good he's always scored. As for Johnson he was playing well when they signed him. Yes he's not so great now but. And I'm sorry Evans is a good prem CB and fletcher is solid.

Defoe or wickham hmmmmm
Evans or hangeland hmmmm

Hangeland. Every day of the week.

Thread should be re-titled '' why do we struggle to sign players with big reputations '' ?

With the exception of Cabaye, our policy is geared towards younger players with some re-sale value.

Wow some sensible and credible comments for a change ! I agree with a lot of the comments, but mainly it must be something to do with wages we don't pay enough. In reality though I'm sure we would all be the same if you were offered more money down the road at another job you would except it if it meant you could the same thing every day and get paid more money ? Cabaye obviously done it to showcase himself to get into the team for France again, which is working for him. As for signing other players look at adebayour he is quality no matter what anyone says he would score goals but can we afford him ? Yes ! But would we pay His wages? I predict no, not what he wants anyway. As for the other players we could go for, the European option I just don't think we have a presence that attracts a quality player. Cabaye an exception only to pardew working his magic.

I knew id get some hate ! I'm not saying are players are the bottom of the barrel just given options would you sign Chung young lee again ? Or Kelly? There championship players and we got them because they were cheap and fittest he squad at the time. My point is we want to improve on what we have and if we do it will cost.

Wickham is a young, exciting player, which some of you are too ignorant to realize

And wickham is young you forget that as he's been around for ages but I just don't think he's a goal scorer. I hope I'm proved wrong because it's good to see young English players thrive. But I can't see him being a 15+ a season guy. Goals are everything and that's shown in our results recently.

A good question PinkFluff.....
I don't think many people fully understand what work goes into signing a player, especially overseas with the risk to us being hugely increased when the value gets into the telephone numbers category. Add to this the numbers of other clubs who are also 'fishing in the same pond' many of whom desperate to sign forcing the value and wages up. Palace want value as the business model dictates and we won't spend over the odds and for the sake of a signing to please the fans. Don't forget we have entered Administration twice and so the value of the £1 is important. Be rest assured (I am sure) that everything is being done to bring the best quality players we can afford to our fantastic club. We do not have the image of Chelsea, Arsenal or the Manchester clubs but will do in time, just consider how far we have come!
Frustrating yes but there is still 2 weeks to go of the window and this is Palace so expect the unexpected!!

Well said sir, it's just frustrating not knowing and watching the team stutter after an incredible start, like you say it's all money and if we let on who were after we could alert other clubs around us to players ect, and drive the price up. I hope something is being done I just fear a let's make do scenario and stagnation or worse being overtaken by other clubs below us. All we need is a striker and maybe a CB to freshen up the squad get some competition going and get the best out of everyone.

Yes it's akin to swimming with sharks and Messrs Parrish and his team are now pretty adept and by the way many PL clubs, perhaps Europe as well would love to have him at the helm I am sure. Why would our friends from the States invest in us? The bottom line is that we are a bloody well run and attractive to put money into club and nothing will be done to jeopardise that and for this I applaud them.
Our magnificent start to the season has now stalled, for how long who knows but this has demonstrated that we have perhaps to thinner squad to mount a serious challenge to the title (can't believe I have said that!!) and this goes to show what expectation levels have now risen to; perhaps we are now experiencing a dose of reality. IMO with no new faces in the window a top 10 finish should be achievable. A goal scoring centre forward on board perhaps top 6.....let's enjoy 😀

I think our tactics to manage risk have been to buy three or four players from a level down with the potential to do really well in the Prem, for the same price as an established name from the Prem or similar overseas. We work on a numbers basis that one or two out of every four will pay off and we eventually loan out or sell the others or keep them as squad cover.

Lee was one that hasn't yet made the step up and may not, but Souare, Dann and Ledley have way more than justified their price tags. It's a much less risky strategy for a club like us than to spend the same combined fee as those three for Grabban, as stated in someone else's post.
