An all time Palace legend, although I wasn't around to see Peter Simpson in his pomp. Dad used to take me when we lived in Norbury in the late 40's and the arrival on the scene of Budgie Byrne brought fame to Palace in the late 50's, especially just before his transfer to West Ham for £58000 plus the tragic Ron Brett as a makeweight.
Still got his rosette for the FA Cup visit to Villa Park in 1962 when we lost 3-4 and Budgie laid on our goals and even my namesake managed to get one!
He deserves a memorial as very few later players were as good (maybe Atilio Lombardo came close)
To compare him with Bolassie is a joke - Budgie was a playmaker who also scored a lot of goals!

The club should definitely do much better in honouring a club legend who continued to excel when he left us.

My dad was a West Ham boy, but took me to Selhurst to support our local club. Though I was relatively young when Johnny was there, his class was obvious. My dad was not surprisingly less than distraught when Johnny was sold to the Hammers, and actually took me to Upton Park to watch him in the 1985 Cup Winner's Cup semi-final.

There are quite a few mentions of him in the fairly recent Bobby Moore biography as they were great friends.

If you've never had the privilege of seeing him in action, Youtube has the complete match of the 1964 Cup Final: West Ham vs Preston. Well worth a watch of him and his Hammer contemporaries.

I proudly possess two separate photographs of Johnny Bryne and Vic Rouse awarding me a trophy on behalf of the 61st Croydon Cub Scouts football team.

I was enjoying this post until you suggested that because Budgie was a Palace legend Bolaisie is a joke by comparison. Why should Budgie's reputation reflect badly on anyone else? Bolaisie will be seen one day as a legend at Palace, though not so much as Budgie, but so what? There's room in my Eagle heart to accept both and more! I remember seeing budgie dribble the ball upfield and hold on to it, then coming back to the Palace half. With two minutes of the game to go and Palace one up, what cheek! I think that was against Torquay in about 1964. Palace's emergence as a club with a bigger future was upon us. I feel Palace are about to take the next step up and Budgie was certainly at the very beginning of this growth.

I remember Johnny as my hero back when I first started watching Palace at Selhurst, standing in the mud at the Whitehorse Lane end, behind the goal of my number 1 hero Vic Rouse,(who I tried to be like..fat chance.)

Johnny , was in a class of his own, just like Wilf,Yannick, are today..what a player..nobody could touch him, unbelievable for the day, as don't forget the ball was leather, and a damn sight heavier, more so when wet.. which was often.. the boots were like 'diving boots', and heavy, but Johnny performed 'magic'..I for one think Johnny Byrne deserves to be remembered in a big way at Selhurst..so how about it Steve?

No sorry those two are only fit to clean his boots, he was a brilliant player, and a family friend he was my uncle Vince Blore's best friend and was always round our house when I lived in Upper Selsdon road between 1953 and 1958.

A couple of points I need to make is that I think its a bit harsh and unfair to denigrate Wilf and Yannick who imo are amongst the best we've had at Selhurst but lack the goal scoring touch of Budgie.
The other point: I remember as a kid, getting the 68 bus from West Norwood and at Crown Point Vic Rouse would get on the bus to the ground. He was then a welsh international like Wayne Hennessey,How times have changed

Not in the slightest Johnny Byrne was twice the player they are, and not just for his goals, his ball control and tricks left players for dead, and he played as a team member, with no show boating he just got on with the game, he has to be the best player to ware a Palace shirt all time.

You most definitely did not see Johnny Byrne in a Palace shirt in 1964, as he signed for West Ham on the 9th of March 1962, he was allowed to play for Palace against Real Madrid by West Ham on 18th April 1962 as part of the transfer deal, Palace lost 3-4, don't remember if he scored but he definitely played.

Well remember that 4th div promotion season.

Vic rouse was my favourite, but we also had Johnny Gavin and Ron heckman on the wings, plus terry long and George petchey, the skipper, in midfield.

We seemed to win every home match 5-0 - except against posh.

Budgie had great ball control and was certainly a show boater, but IMO he was not as clever as wilf whose brilliance can take your breath away.

Other players of yesteryear who could also turn on the magic include Vince hillaire, don Rogers and peter taylor.

I recall budgie had a column in the croydon advertiser - once he had a right go at a teammate , Brian Lewis, which prompted a flurry of angry letters.

Am I right in thinking he was in the 1966 World Cup squad?

Later in his career, he played in midfield for Fulham but this was not a success.

What ever, in those days if you got cocky, trust me you would have ended up in the top row of the stand, Neanderthal man(centre half) would have kicked you there, players were a lot tougher then than they are now, I used to be a centre half in the mid to late 60s and my policy was "the ball may pass me but the player not", and my coach used to say to me if it moves and is not the same colour as your shirt "kick it".

Yes, Budgie played against Real Madrid but he didn't score. Ron Heckman, Andy Smillie and Terry Long's thunderbolt were our scorers.

Comparisons between Byrne & Bolasie aren't really fair to either party, until his return in 1966 Byrne only played for Palace in Divs 4 & 3, but my grandfather and older brother have both told me that he was the best player they ever saw play for Palace. But they didn't see him in the Prem where I can say that Bolasie ripping Liverpool apart is just about the most thrilling thing I've seen at least since Ian Wright did the same to Man Utd, and before that Don Rogers did it too. It doesn't mean they were better than anyone else, but they were brilliant at that level at that time. Who of us knows how good Peter Simpson was? All we can do is look in the book - 165 goals.

Here's Budgie appearing against Madrid....

No he missed out on selection, as he had a poor season by his standards, that was due to him carrying an injury for a lot of the season, in those days if you could walk you played.
