Although the article says it was not released, I think Jolene was not released by the SoM but as a Peel session. I can no longer respect the link as a source of Goth goodness. It was on a peel session, that was released as a bootleg. The claim is that just about everything the sisters ever did got released on a bootleg somewhere. The rumour was that the band themselves were putting them out.

I've just noticed, but do have to be in what the swivel eyes would call the HOL leftie clique to be a SoM fan?

I need to go home and find my white cover version of Floodland because that had a really peculiar track listing on it. I can't find it on Discogs. It was white, with Japanese writing and a picture of Eldritch in a fencing outfit. I'm sure it didn't have the usual Floodland tracks on it (although I've never actually played it) and it had at least one cover on it, possibly Emma given that they put Emma on the remastered CD version....

I was at school with SoM guitarist Ben Gunn, aka Benjamin Matthews. I shared this information with kermit8 a while ago and he was very excited, being as he is a big SoM fan. Our families were close friends and I used to knock about with Ben and his brother in Clapham in the 1970's. They moved to Leeds and we visited them a few times up there. I don't actually like their music but am contractually obliged to drop Ben's name into any conversation about Sisters of Mercy which I come across. Edited by Seth (23 Apr 2015 4.01pm) isn't he an accountant nowadays? Not sure tbh. Haven't seen him for about 10 years and not really au fait with what he's doing any more.

I met Ben Gunn at a Bowie gig in Milton Keynes not long before he left. Very nice fella. Asked him why 'no album?'. Boiled down to lack of money. Took them four years to release their first album eventually. Hard to believe now looking back as they had a proper big following two years at least before it was finally put together. Made the pilgrimage to their spiritual home The Warehouse club in Leeds same time when they were playing the Uni there. I swear I must have lost a stone in sweat everytime I saw them through the magnificent yet somewhat violent form of dancing that accompanied the music at the front. No seats in them days. Made a bootleg or two myself. Not easy when you've got arms, fists and allsorts crashing into you and you gotta do the same back. All in a friendly way I must add.

I know all about The Sisters of Mercy. 80 years ago when I was 7 years old I went to their school and they use to slap me on my bare legs with a leather belt. I can forgive but never forget!

Before moshing, there was wrecking, the post punk fight club work out. The Sisters self released EP via the Reptile House, were massively successful independent releases, recorded on a four track - But to get the money to actually record an album and release it is a massive financial undertaking - Which is why they signed to a label, to get 'First and Last and Always' done. The original EPs were essentially all 'home made' releases, but Temple of Love actually entered the top 100 singles charts (back when selling singles meant something).

I have a decent selection of SoM vinyls actually, largely from trolling around Beanos in Croydon on a Saturday morning with money to burn!
